Help Understanding Associate Degrees and Transferring

Hey all. I'm planning to apply to Foothill College (community college) and I'm trying to understand the process of achieving and earning an associate degree and using it to transfer to CSUs and UCs.

Right now my concerns and questions are mostly regarding transferable credits and using ASSIST.org.

What are transferable credits? What are it's differences in relation to articulated courses?

Especially in relation to the 90 transferable quarter credit requirement. I tried out ASSIST.org and it shows me articulate courses between two schools (Foothill College and CSU Long Beach with their Aerospace Engineering programme). Adding up the articulated courses credits doesn't total up to the required 90 transferable quarter credits needed to be a transfer student. I also read somewhere that transferable credits are courses numbered from 01-99 or something like that.

So, does that mean that any of the courses I take that are numbered from 01-99 are transferable to achieve the 90 credits required? What does this have to do with the articulated courses?

What's the difference between an articulated course and a transferable course?

Lastly, I'm worrying about the differences between a "Transferable Associate Degree" and a "normal" associate degree. The programme/course I'm aiming to study at in Foothill College is their Engineering programme. Their Engineering programme is not under the "Associate Degree for Transfer" programme ("a degree o a guarantee"), I think this is the TAG programme? Their Engineering degree programme is just a "normal" associate degree.

Am I still able to transfer to a 4-year university with this "normal" associate degree?

Thanks!

You’ll find all the answers at Foothill’s transfer center. Look at the Transfer GE Guide on their webpage. There are lots of rules and Assist helps you determine what classes are transferable and what classes are prerequisites.

You don’t need an AS to transfer into a CSU engineering program but you do need to take all the transferable general ed classes and prerequisites (add all up to meet minimum 90 qtr units) toward the major at CSULB. Enter your courses and grades into CSUMentor.edu which is also used to apply.

Thanks! I’m an international applicant and the option for an associate degree where I live is a new concept and isn’t widely known.

So, I’m new to this and the US education system and, wow, there are lot of things to take in. I’ll look around Foothill’s Transfer Centre, try to get in contact with them (been waiting almost a week for a reply) and read up their FAQ and come back if I need more specific answers and/or have further questions.

However, what you said also brings up more questions, especially about not needing an AS to transfer into a CSU’s engineering programme.

Thanks again!

When you become a student at Foothill, you’ll probably have an orientation where you’ll learn all the answers. The Transfer Center is probably closed until school starts.
