Help Understanding Prep Questions

Hey everyone! So, I'm diligently trying to improve my critical reading score, which is not turning out so well. I always have trouble interpreting what the passage mean, which I know is a vital skill for this section.

If you have the Official SAT Study Guide (2nd Edition, copyrighted in 2009, but it should be the most current one), and wouldn't mind helping me understand these questions, I'd greatly appreciate it. It's pretty annoying that there aren't any explanations for answers, and if there are, I must sound pretty stupid by now lol.

The questions are:

Test 10:
-Section 6
11
12
16
20
21
22

Thanks so much! I hope this isn't a bother, and I would appreciate any amount of answers given!

Let’s take a look at the passage. In lines 4-10, Douglass shows northern readers that “the very condition of enslavement directly contravened their deepest principles of individualism”. He argues that slavery and individualism are not compatible. He also “identified himself with the triumph of manliness and individualism that slavery suppressed” Looking at the answer choices, choice D says, "evocation of a revered concept (individualism which he possesses) followed by a specific reference (enslavement) to its undermining (“enslavement directly contravened their deepest principles of individualism”). The other answers are not supported by the passage.

Work out means formulate because the sentence says, “A few northern White women were beginning to WORK OUT the analogy between blah blah blah”. Substituting a word/phrase such as “come up with” or “create” would work. Looking at the answer choices…

exercise is the wrong type of “work out” rofl
conciliate is also wrong as it refers to mediation rather than problem solving
struggle for does not fit because the sentence does not indicated that any struggle is going on
solve does not fit in context because the connection was created by the women; the idea of it did not exist before these women brought it up. this would probably be the next best answer, but it does not have the right connotation in this sense.

Therefore, formulate is the best answer because the women find out a connection between slavery and female oppression.

I’ll possibly get more of them done after I do more government homework. If you would like me to elaborate more on any of the ones I’ve done so far, please feel free to ask.

Thanks a lot! I’m still unsure of 11, probably because it was hard for me to understand half of the answer choices lol but that’s okay since I pretty much see why D was right.

I don’t want to interrupt your homework! I’m sorry! :(
