So i'm applying for UWC when i'm 16(in 2 years).I think this is a really good choice for me,but anyway. And I need some tip/advice about this whole thing. Here are some questions:
How was the application process?
What type of questions did they ask you?
If you were in the group interview was it hard?
Did they tell you what type of student are they looking for?If so,what?
Was it really hard during the whole Application thing?
Do your test scores need to be high?
What type of community service do they look for in a student?
Is it true they pick a UWC college for you?
Do they give out scholarships to all of the people who went through?
Also please tell me what you think the requirements are, like the grades they look for and everything else.

I'm from the U.S and i'm thinking about applying for UWC Adriatic,UWC Atlantic,USA-UWC.
This has been a dream of mine please help out! (:

Most people here don’t do UWC, but I heard DiveAlive is doing it. Perhaps the best choice would be to PM her with the questions.

yep, circlemidnight’s right  if all goes according to plan, i will be applying to UWC this year.

How was the application process?
well, can’t really answer this one :stuck_out_tongue: i’d just recommend contacting your country committee as early as possible and asking what you could to in order to prepare

What type of questions did they ask you?
from what i’ve heard, it’s typically things about Why UWC, why you’re interested in diversity/multiculturalism/what attracts you to IB/what do you like about the UWC movement or philosophy/a lot of get to know you questions (ie interests, hobbies, skills)

If you were in the group interview was it hard?
i know someone who had a group interview that lasted for 8 hours! they were in a big group (12 people) and they sat down and had pizza and chatted so that the admin could get to know them and their personality. sounds like a pretty relaxed thing, but it could be an exception .

Did they tell you what type of student are they looking for?If so,what?
students who are interested in IB and the UWC philosophy, who are passionate about something, motivated & accomplished & hardworking students who bring something interesting to the table.

Was it really hard during the whole Application thing?
no idea :P

Do your test scores need to be high?
ideally, yes.

What type of community service do they look for in a student?
uh, what do you mean? anything, really-- it can be like animal shelter or library or senior home or whatever, as long as you’re genuinely interested in it and its not blatantly obvious that you’re only doing it for college

Is it true they pick a UWC college for you?
you can apply directly to a UWC but if you apply through your country board you usually get placed. you can list preferences but i honestly think the UWC people might know more about each school’s personality than you :stuck_out_tongue:

Do they give out scholarships to all of the people who went through?
some schools, like Pearson College on vancouver island are full-scholarship schools while others are a mix of fee-paying or scholarship-covered. check with your country board-- i believe in most cases you can apply for either (scholarship or fee) or in both pools. obviously, the fee-paying pool is less competitive.

Also please tell me what you think the requirements are, like the grades they look for and everything else.
nothing-- just be yourself and cross your fingers! good luck!

I quote the official website "**We are only able to accept applications of this nature (i.e. applying directly) once the interested applicant has verified that they are unable to apply through a UWC national committee, either in their country of residence or, where different, in the country they are citizens of.

There is no scholarship provision for students who apply direct to these colleges. Fees vary depending on the college/school.**"

Again, based on the official website "**Students are selected to UWC on the basis of personal merit and potential. Race, gender, religion, politics and ability to pay are not considered during the selection process. Many students attend UWC with full or partial scholarships and UWC national committees allocate scholarships as part of the selection process.

It is UWC’s goal that it will meet 100% of student need and we are actively fundraising to achieve this aim.**"

Uhhhh, I think you all should read the official website first.

[How to Apply | Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific](http://www.pearsoncollege.ca/admissions/how-apply)

you can apply directly to Pearson. Pearson is a no-exception 100% scholarship school so even if you apply directly, you will receive a scholarship. i believe this policy applies only to Canadians, as Pearson is in Canada, but seeing as individual schools make exceptions to the rules you pointed out from the official website, it’s a better idea to go to each school’s individual website than the “official” UWC one.

“Students are selected to UWC on the basis of personal merit and potential. Race, gender, religion, politics and ability to pay are not considered during the selection process. Many students attend UWC with full or partial scholarships and UWC national committees allocate scholarships as part of the selection process.”

from Pearson’s website, “applicants will be contacted and asked if they wish to be considered for a fee-paying competition in addition to the competition for the scholarships.” again, this rule only applies to Canadians but they obviously make exceptions to rules. also, using common sense-- if there’s a fee-paying pool and a scholarship-pool, and you’re able to pay so you’re in both pools, obviously your chances of getting in are higher. also, if there are separate pools, (fee and scholarship) 99% of the time, scholarship pools are more competitive. it’s kind of like need-blind boarding schools-- sure, you claim to be need-blind but if you have 2 applicants who are nearly identical and one needs FA and the other doesn’t, guess which one will probably get in?

so, yeah, the UWC official website rules tend to get broken a lot. Pearson makes a lot of exceptions for Canadians so maybe if you’re American, look into the USA UWC’s website-- maybe they’ll make exceptions for you.

anyway, if you’re really dying to know someone and need to be certain of it, contact UWC directly rather than asking on the internet. best of luck!

okay thanks(:
i’ll make sure to contact them soon(:
so is Pearson the only school that gives out full scholarships?
thanks

Thank you(:

hey! I’m Kate and I’m headed to UWC Atlantic College in August.

How was the application process?
In October UWC-USA posts the application on the website, its fairly long and looks alot like a college application (Grades, recommendations, essays, ect). In Feb. or so, they will email all of the applicants and let you know if you get an interview.

What type of questions did they ask you?
They asked me alot about what I put on my application. Extracurriculars, books, the stuff I wrote my written responses on, ect. I heard from others in my interview group that they were asked about current events, so I guess it depends on the person interviewing you.

If you were in the group interview was it hard?
My group had 13 people in it, it was an all-day event (yes, we had pizza!) but it was fun. We did some team-building activites and personal interviews in the morning, had lunch, and then in the afternoon did a debate and more activities. All of the people running the interview had graduated from UWC, so it was a really good time to learn more about the schools and the types of people that graduated from them.

Did they tell you what type of student are they looking for?If so,what?
There is no set ‘UWC’ person. They want people with diverse interests and personalities. Generally, people with an interest in international understanding and service.

Was it really hard during the whole Application thing?
It was nerve-wracking, but a very long process so you have alot of time to think through it.

Do your test scores need to be high?
I think they just want to see if your test scores line up with your grades because while they want academically talented students, it’s a person’s desire to learn that matters the most.

What type of community service do they look for in a student?
all kinds. They do require a recommendation from a volunteer or extracurricular advisor though, so it’s good if you have one developed area of service (of course, a sport or club would count as well).

Is it true they pick a UWC college for you?
Yes. In the application, you rank you preferences but when they decide who gets in, they pick the 50 students first, without deciding where they will go. After they know which 50 will get in, they use the preferences to help choose…generally alot of American students want to go to Atlantic, and 25 will go to UWC-USA, so if you want to go to a more unusual UWC you are more likely to have your preferences honored. However, Atlantic and Adriatic were in my top three, and I got into Atlantic.

Do they give out scholarships to all of the people who went through?
Every US kid gets a full scholarship to the UWC he/she gets into because of Shelby Davis, a HUGE supporter of the UWC movement.

Also please tell me what you think the requirements are, like the grades they look for and everything else.
There are no minimum requirements, good grades are nice and certainly they look for people who can keep up with the academic rigor of UWC, but you’ll be suprised how much they look at who you are in the application process. It’s pretty intense, you won’t be just a number, they are very careful to make sure they choose people who will contribute positively to UWC.
That’s all I can think of…don’t hesitate if you have any further questions, good luck!

thanks that helped alot(:

quick question! the national committee of my country only gives out scholarships to UWC-USA/Red Cross Nordic/ L.B. Pearson/Adriatic. Does that mean I don’t have a chance of going to… say, Li Po Chun UWC or UWC of the Atlantic? thanks!

^^ no one on the internet can confirm for sure, so i’d email or phone your national committee to verify.

i think maybe you could apply to those schools directly (maybe!) but if your country doesn’t give out scholarships for those schools, expect to pay in full

alright! thanks! :))

You’re really on top of this! I didn’t find out about UWC until like a week before I applied…

I’m a second-year student at UWC-USA. Kate mostly answered your questions, but feel free to ask if you have any more.

Before UWC, I had done no community service. I had, however, been extensively involved in computer science and debate. You just need to demonstrate a serious commitment to something.

Really, admission to UWC is very similar to selective college admissions. It’s done holistically, factoring in grades, test scores, extracurriculars, and essays. In fact, the essay prompts are the same as those used on the Common App.

All USA students (those who got in through the US national committee) receive a full scholarship, regardless of need, to whatever UWC the national committee sends them to. There is also a need-based grant to cover travel expenses, if needed.

If you are capable of paying, certainly talk to your national committee. They can often get you a spot, if you are qualified, as many of the UWCs are undergoing budget problems.

Kate ! Can you tell me more about UWC ! like eveyrthing you know  and could you please tell me if there is anyway that i could get my preference UWC college ??

Hi! I’m working towards going to UWC next year and am taking GCE O’s this year. I was wondering, if i am not committed to my extra curricular right now, will it affect whether or not the committee will pick me? Also, how is the level of difficulty of the placement tests in UWC like as compared to GCEO’s? Thanks!

hey, I suppose that you are trying to apply this year, so as I’m , it is better if you apply by your national committee, it gives you more chances to get in to one of the UWC it is also great to know other options before you peek a favorite school, I say that because taking in to account that you are planing to apply to Canada’s college you should know that you have to have a great grades, you ca’t have a bad average or you’ll lose the scholarship, it is also great to see other options
About the interview it is to know your personal profile, and it is also a discussion about any topic, you also need to have good grades from school, this is also taking in to account because there is where they can see who deserve the scholarship for the responsibility and the compromise that applying students have whit school.
Yes the national committee peek a school for you, according to your economical needs and the needs of the other people that applies, same process is made in the Canada’s direct applying. I think, as a personal advise, to apply by your national committee, they also peek the right college for you according to what they see during all the process.
