Help us audit our school pages

If you’re browsing schools on our school page and stumble on any info that doesn’t look right, it would be helpful if you could please comment below to let us know. We’re currently reporting the 2022 admissions data that we get through IPEDs/ Common Dataset, so the numbers won’t be updated with 2023 stats until this summer, but we do want to make sure the general info on test optional, ed/ ea, acceptance rate, deadlines, and other 2022 data matches what schools are posting on their websites. It’s important that we’re one of the best data sources out there, and we’d love it if you can help us get there!

Joy -

Purdue’s page says they have continual application processing. They moved away from rolling admission more than 5 cycles ago. The EA deadline is typically 11/1 and RD is 1/15.

Purdue is back to test required next cycle.

I also think it would be helpful to indicate that the college admits by college/major and some are much, much more competitive than the overall acceptance rate for the university. Same is true for the average GPA and test scores.

That information would be very helpful to many students making college application lists, but it seems to be less available in standardized form (IPEDS / collegenavigator, CDS / collegedata, etc.) and is often not that clearly stated on college web sites.

Most colleges are much less transparent than San Jose State University is on the topic of different levels of competitiveness for admission to various majors (lots of majors at SJSU admitted frosh applicants with HS GPA 2.6, but CS required a 4.3 and animation required a 4.0 + supplemental drawing exercises – GPA has limited weighting that could be up to 0.3-0.4 higher than unweighted, and there is a +0.25 for local area applicants).

Also, secondary admission or weed-out for some majors exists at some colleges.

Thank you! This is helpful. Just want to clarify- Purdue was test optional for this cycle but is requiring admissions tests for the next cycle? Is that correct?

Regarding SJSU and its profile at https://www.collegeconfidential.com/colleges/san-jose-state-university/ , note that it is also SAT/ACT blind, so the predicted chance of admission based on ACT score is not too relevant, and the score ranges are stale if they came from the last year that it used SAT/ACT scores. SJSU also has no ED or EA.

Technically Purdue was test “flexible” because they still wanted to see results if the tests were taken but, they are going back to test required for the next admission cycle.

Looking ahead : In 2024, Purdue will return to requiring the SAT or ACT test score(s) for admission consideration.” - Freshman Admission Criteria - Undergraduate Admissions - Purdue University

Please capitalize UC Davis. It is currently written as uc davis throughout the pages.

“The school accepts AP creditbut not IB credits” - UC Davis does accept IB credit. International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level Examination Credit

Students are not required to fulfill a language requirement - Some majors require a foreign language requirement - Degree Requirements

“Many students like to take classes in the summer, to earn extra credits. However, uc davis does not offer classes during the summer.” This is wrong. UC Davis offers courses during two summer sessions. https://summer-sessions.ucdavis.edu/

Berkeley is listed as “unknown” as to whether AP/IB are accepted. Both are.
Berkeley offers two summer sessions

UCLA offers two summer sessions.

UCSB is located in Goleta, ten miles north of Santa Barbara

UC Irvine is located in Orange County, not “near Los Angeles.”
UC Irvine offers two summer sessions

UCSB says, "UC Santa Barbara is a top 10 public university located on the shore of the Pacific Ocean. "

USNWR top 10 public universities include Berkeley, UCLA, UCSB, UCI, UCD and UCSD. Only UCSB lists “top 10” in its description. And only UCSB mentions number of majors/minors/colleges and academics, research and support.

The Student Involvement sentence looks like it should be a hyperlink but it is not at any of the schools I looked at.

It may be overall*, but using overall numbers obviously obscures in-state versus out-of-state differences at any state university.

Of course, “meet need” is a measure that colleges can game by defining “need” however they want. Actually, it would be better replace this “meet need” line with a link the college’s net price calculator.

*Because UCD is expensive with no financial aid for out-of-state, it is likely that out-of-state students who actually attend are mainly those with no financial need (however calculated).

Thank you for all the help here! Please continue to comment if you see anything that doesn’t look quite right.

How nit picky do you want us to be? In my opinion, all of the colleges sound the same.

Every school says:

Interested in music or performing? At XYZ you can join a campus band, sing in a chorus, or perform with one of the school’s theater groups.

Interested in journalism or communications? XYZ students can write for the campus newspaper, host a radio show or be a producer for the student-run television channel.

Excited for Greek life? XYZ has both fraternities and sororities.

Planning to play sports? XYZ has many options for athletes. See them all and learn more about life at XYZ on the Student Life page.

For the UCs, the following section is painfully generic. While each UC looks for different attributes in an applicant, you should, at a minimum, link to the 13 Criteria the UCs use to review applications.

What Does UCXX Look For in an Applicant?

Colleges consider a range of factors when deciding who to admit for their next incoming class. Each college determines which factors are are most important in the admissions process. When creating your list of schools to apply to, you may want to consider your strengths and any possible weaknesses in your application, and apply to colleges that prioritize the areas where you stand out.

Other than the boxes with the check marks, the Student Life section is the same for all 9 UCs. Student Life at UCLA is very different than student life at Santa Cruz. Student life at UC Irvine is very different than student life at UC Davis. Some kids want to go to a school with football. Why is that not listed for UCLA, Berkeley and Davis?

USC’s Thornton School of Music, School of Dramatic Arts, Kaufman School of Dance and School of Cinematic Arts are top programs. If a student is interested in music or performing, These programs should be recognized. Currently, if one were to go to the CC USC page, they see the same response as every other college - “Are you interested in music or performing? Join a campus band, sing in a chorus, or perform with one of the school’s theater groups.”

Likewise, Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism is a highly ranked program. It should be referenced by name instead of the generic response of “Are you interested in journalism and communications? USC students can write for the campus newspaper, host a radio show or be a producer for the student-run television channel.”

What is the early decision acceptance rate at USC?

:yellow_square: USC may or may not offer early decision. The school has not provided any information on early decision including ED acceptance rates.

This is because USC does not offer Early Decision.
USC offers Early Action for majors that do not require a portfolio.
USC does not waitlist students. Some students are offered spring admission.

This statement makes no sense. “If you’d like to visit USC, take Harbor Freeway to Los Angeles, CA:rofl:

USC does accept AP credits and does offer a summer program.
USC OSAS offers services to students with disabilities.

I don’t know if the stats are accurate or not. @CADreamin and @wwward are more knowledgeable about USC and can probably provide additional corrections.

Well said.

Per USC… these are the new #s for the Class of 2027: By March 24, a record-high 80,790 applications had been received, and USC sent acceptance letters to 9,277 students, yielding a record low 9.9% fall admission rate.

Of those admitted, 23% will be the first in their family to attend college — the highest rate ever recorded at USC. Legacy students make up 12% of the admitted class.

A third of students identify with a historically underrepresented racial or ethnic group.

Californians make up 38% of the new class, followed by New York, Texas, Illinois, Washington and New Jersey as the most represented states. 19% are international students from 87 different countries.

3.9 was the average GPA for the class of 2027. 41% of students earned perfect grades in high school.

So… yes - the stats listed at University of Southern California - College Confidential are rather outdated. And yes… the descriptions are rather generic and not really tailored to describe USC specifically.

I would instead say something more like…

The University of Southern California was founded in 1880 in Los Angeles and is the oldest private research university in California. USC is composed of 23 undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools, enrolling roughly 21,000 undergraduate and 28,500 post-graduate students from all 50 U.S. states and more than 115 countries. USC is ranked as one of the top universities in the United States and with a fall 2023 acceptance rate of only 9.9%, admission to its programs is considered highly selective.

USC has had 537 football players drafted to the National Football League, the second-highest number of draftees in the country.

USC has graduated more alumni who have gone on to win Academy and Emmy Awards than any other institution, largely due to its top-ranked School of Cinematic Arts.
