Help: US Citizen Confirmation??

Apparently my Financial Aid checklist says that I need to submit proof of citizenship.. Does anyone know why I would need to do this? I was born outside of the US, but I do have my citizenship (as I have lived in the US over 10 years and both of my parents are citizens), and I also provided Duke with my SSN.

Also, apparently the last date to send in proof of citizenship was yesterday (about an hour ago). Will my undergraduate application be affected if I don't send that in time? Will I be classified as an international student until that time? Does this only affect my financial aid or my undergraduate application as well?

Thanks

Only citizens (and possibly legal aliens, though I’m not sure) are qualified for government student loans and grants, so that’s why they need to know. I don’t think it’ll affect your application since I’m sure you checked citizen/domestic on your paperwork back in December. It might stall your financial aid, but admissions is need blind so it shouldn’t matter. I’d suggest calling them in the morning and faxing a copy of your proof of citizenship to their office. (FYI, legal aliens also get SSN, so SSN is not proof that you’re a citizen.)

i had the same issue with tufts and rice. maybe with duke too but i obviously wasnt aware that they needed it too until now…i just mailed in copies of my passport. looks like ill have to do the same for duke too…

Permanent residents are also able to apply for financial aid.

Duke actually lumps US citizens and permanent residents together under their need blind admission and financial aid policy so as long as you checked the appropriate box on the application, I think Duke will pretty much takes your word for it (pending submission of proof apparently). Hell, I didn’t even submit my passport until my sophomore year and it was fine, I just walked over to the office on Central, let them photocopy it, and was out the door 5 min later. I wouldn’t sweat it too much. You’ve come this far, I don’t think Duke will do anything drastic just because you didn’t send in a copy of your passport. Just give them a call tomorrow and offer to fax it in.

Thanks guys. I’ll call them today.
