as long as you don’t fail classes, you’ll be fine.

ALL freshman housing is close to campus. university hall was the furthest, but now they’ve converted it to upperclassmen housing.

weinstein is the most convenient because you’re two blocks from Silver, four blocks from Bobst and you have THREE dining options within your own building. (plus, there’s a 24 hour convenience store attached to the building.)

brittany is not too much further, but there’s no air conditioning. i’ve never been inside brittany.

hayden has the best dining hall, but it’s furthest from any classrooms. it’s at the other side of the park.

third north is apartment-style and a ten minute walk from campus, but you’re soooooo close to so many awesome restaurants. (bars, too, but you’re all too young for that! buying a fake ID is a misdemeanor in NY if you get caught, it’s not worth it!)

goddard would be my choice, but since you have to write an essay and apply to be in goddard, most of it goes to ED kids.

my ~official~ recommendation would be Weinstein if you want traditional. it’s near EVERYTHING.

I have some general questions on the housing process. I sent in my deposit 2 days ago, so I haven’t gotten any information yet, and I’m just a bit anxious about the whole ordeal. My first choice dorm is Hayden, and I have a friend I want to room with. What percent of requests does NYU end up fulfilling, assuming I send in my request before Easter?
Can I also request ‘suite-mates’? I have another close friend who is going to NYU and is dorming, so I was wondering if I could just share a 2-3 bedroom suite with her and my other friend, instead of sharing a cramped triple. Other information on the housing process would be much appreciated! Thanks for taking your time to answer questions. :)

Should I go to NYU or Barnard?
Haha, I can’t decide…they’re so different but I like different things.

2 questions on totally different topics:

first -You mentioned some loneliness, and that’s my biggest concern. I’m not a homesick type, but I have depression and I’m really sensitive to being alone a lot. Is it easy to form relationships with other students and professors quickly or is it easy to get lost in the shuffle?

second -I was just invited into the Steinhardt Scholars Progam and it says it includes merit and need-based financial aid. How much money are they talking about here? My EFC is 6000 but right now I’m looking at 20k in loans per year.

okay, i’ve seen you ask this Steinhardt scholars question in a bunch of different threads. just call the school. call either a) financial aid or b) the office that runs Scholars. i feel bad because i’ve seen the question everywhere and i don’t know the answer, or know anyone in Steinhardt Scholars for that matter.

there’s lots of activities in freshman dorms and during welcome week to help you meet people. forming connections largely depends on the people you are around. you definitely have to forge your own connections. it sucked before, when i wasn’t involved with student activities. but now i know a lot of people and i’m not as isolated as i was before.

(if you’re really worried that you’ll be depressed here, the wellness center/health services has small group meetings for people that are battling depression/loneliness. the counselors here are really awesome and helpful and are there to listen.)

Which housing dorm has a gym or has the best fitness facilities? Also, if you are not placed in a dorm that has a gym, can you go to another housing dorm to use their facilities?

I was rejected from NYU, what is your advice in bumping my chances of acceptance 99% next year? … out of everyone that got accepted this year…I’m one of the people that are truly in love with that school, and I know I belong there…help?

Thank you for starting this thread! A few questions:

I’m a female accepted to Stern. Does that have any significance in how I’ll be treated? Both the female and Stern part. Like better guy to girl ratio in Stern, or uber-competitive Sternie, etc. I told a NYU CAS graduate who did Economics that I got accepted to Stern, and he was pretty… unenthusiastic about it, I must say.

I’m interested in Economics in Stern - how is it?

I’m interested in living in Third North because of the kitchen and also becaue of the location. I don’t mind the walk - what’s a ten minute walk in Manhattan?! But yes, are there any downsides to living there? Room size, etc?

Are the food plans worth it? I want a kitchen so I can cook, but if I cook I wouldn’t need that much of a food plan. I’m always wary of canteen-type food. :S

That’s all the questions I can think of for now - I have so many! Thank you for your time and sorry for the trouble! :)

@celestial

i transferred so i don’t know how freshman housing applications work. :frowning: it’s a different process when you’re an upperclassmen. sorry. you can request roommates, but you’ll probably end up in a triple.

@ninja

the two gyms are Coles on Mercer St. and Palladium on E 14th. Palladium is the upperclassmen dormitory and it is the only dorm with a fully outfitted gym. there might be “fitness rooms” in your dorm, but it’s most likely full of broken equipment. it’s a five minute walk from campus to Coles, and a fifteen minute walk to Palladium. an NYU bus drops students off at the Coral Towers dorm a block away from Palladium.

all matriculated NYU students can use either Coles or Palladium. both of them have pools, but Coles has the rooftop track. Coles is where we have our sporting events, and Coles is where the official athletic offices are for our varsity sports.

@blog

1- i don’t know many girls in Stern. the one girl i know in Stern is in marketing and she’s found all of her classes incredibly easy. the people around you will be very competitive but she hasn’t noticed any negative aspects to being a young woman in Stern. i’m not quite sure what you’re asking- are you worried about being in Stern? the gender ratio is totally skewed in Stern, it seems to be a majority of male students.

2- i’m in Steinhardt and i don’t know anyone in economics, sorry.

3- the rooms are grimy in Third North. they’re run down. but if you like having a 24 hour computer lab and lots of food options around you, it’s nice.

4- we have really fantastic dining hall food. Hayden has great food. it’s all fresh and local or organic and there’s a great sandwich and salad bar.

obviously, if you ate at ANY one particular dining hall all the time, you’ll get sick of it eventually. but there’s a ton of places on the meal plan. personally, i feel that if you’re getting substantial financial aid, it’s to your benefit to get a meal plan. you’ll stick to your budgets better if all of your food is pre-purchased and paid in full. (if you stick to the plan, that is!) i’m always shocked at people who have meal plans but complain of having no money because they’re always eating out. (and by “eating out” i mean fast food, quick service food like Chipotle or McDonalds.) your parents already paid for the food, why aren’t you using it?!

we have vegan food, indian food, a quiznos, a chik-fil-a, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, stir-frys, salad bars, pizzas cooked to order, a pasta bar and even steak nights on the meal plans. yes, we have the standard “college food” (pizza/burgers/fries/cereal for every meal) too!

as a freshman, you won’t have time to cook. i’m a junior and i still don’t have time to cook, and i have a kitchen. i would get a meal plan for the first year. it’ll be freeing to not have to worry about cooking for the first year. that’s my opinion, anyway. (i was on a meal plan for an entire summer and it was nice to just drop in, eat, and run!)

Sorry for not being clear I wondering if being female in Stern would be disadvantageous or advantageous in any way, e.g. chauvinism, excessive male attention, etc.

By the way, what do you know of the new freshman dorm, 12th Street?

@blogger

i haven’t heard that from girls in Stern. then again, i don’t know a ton of female students in Stern. i think you’ll encounter both of those things in any college, not just Stern (i’ve seen it in my media classes, ugh).

i don’t know much about 12th street, which is why i didn’t comment on it in my rundown of freshmen dorms.

Hi,
I am going to Steinhardt for music performance. What I’ve been wondering is, is it possible to minor or double major in Business in Music, Media, and Technology freshman year? If so, when would I be able to declare? I’ve been looking for info online but couldn’t find anything but the description of the minor/major.

Also, I’m a little confused with my finaid package. How does the whole housing thing work? Do I just send them my choices along with my candidate’s reply card and then pay for the housing once I know where I’m living, or is the housing tuition the same for all freshmen and included in my tuition (because they mentioned that housing is considered as part of my tuition) already?

Thanks!

every major in Steinhardt is different. you would call your primary department/look at your primary department’s webpage. i know that as of now, you can’t double major Steinhardt/Stern, i think you would have to go to Stern first and then double major in Steinhardt. (i’m assuming that when you say Business in Media, Music and Tech, it’s a Stern major.)

i don’t get financial aid so i can’t help you there, sorry. :(

hey, thanks so much for doing this!
anyway, i’m an international student from singapore, just got accepted into NYU CAS 2013.

-is it possible to take a major at CAS (economics) and another one in communications at steinhardt?
-does NYU award merit scholarships after freshman year? i didn’t apply for financial aid because i really wanted to get in, but now i can’t get a local scholarship and my family can’t afford 4 years of nyu ): and if they do,
i. how many people get awarded such scholarships annually (is it incredibly competitive, gpa-wise?)
ii. what do the scholarships cover (tuition /housing /books /or just money?)

i couldn’t find anyth about specific merit scholarships online, and the financial aid office isn’t replying my emails, so really thanks a bunch in advance!!

@glue

i know i can do the reverse of that, i’m a comm major at Steinhardt with a double major in politics at CAS. i don’t know if CAS -> Steinhardt is possible. try calling the directer of undergrad studies in the economics department. they’ll definitely know for sure.

i have a unique financial situation so i don’t know anything about financial aid. sorry. :-(

is the dining good at weinstein? is there air conditioning there?
also, which dorm is closest to chelsea piers? i know chelsea piers is generally pretty far from nyu, but it has a rink and i’m a figure skater >_>
also, which dorm is least party-ish? xD haha odd question. and is there Wi-Fi anywhere on campus/dorms?
