I was recently accepted to both USC and NYU, which are two of my dream schools. I think they're two very different schools, and I don't know which one to go to! Can anyone who is currently at either school give me some insights about the pros/cons of that school?

I know that both would be great... I'm just hoping that this will help me make my decision.

I don’t know if you’ve visited nyu-but its pretty much the exact opposite of usc. it has literally no sports, no campus, few parties in dorms (almost all the night life is at bars, etc.), no greek life, and my first impression when i visited it is that it was very artsy. For all those reasons, i really prefer usc over nyu but it depends what youre looking for i guess!

thanks!
No I haven’t visited it yet… I think I am sometime soon. I’ve heard that the night life at NYU isn’t very good… but it is in New York City.

Did you apply to/are you attending USC?

I applied to USC but havent heard back yet…so doesnt look like im getting in…

I just got my acceptance letter yesterday… so maybe you’ll get yours today
Good luck!!

I would pick USC unless you got a nice scholarship at NYU.

NYU is completely spread out throughout New York City. No community at NYU, no sports, no greek life. USC is completely opposite. Great sports, greek life, and community. Plus great weather. Of course there is no other city like NYC, so I guess it all depends what you are looking for, but I think the decision will be easy once you have visited them both.
They are so different.

You should look at the two departments for your major. My son is very artsy, indie, not AT ALL into football or greek life. I’m sure he’d rather cut off a finger (and he’s a guitarist) than join a frat. Culturally, he’s probably more of your typical (if there is such a thing) NYU kid.

So he got into both NYU and USC… he’s “giving up” New York City and is choosing USC Thornton because of its phenomenal studio guitar program. And knowing some current students as he does, he’s certain there are plenty of artsy indie non-football fan kids at USC as well (just as there are surely sports fanatic/sorority-fraternity “types” at NYU)!

We know of a young man from my daughter’s school who is a sophomore in Thornton. He’s a talented jazz trombonist. I just spoke with him and he absolutely LOVES USC and the phenomenal music program. I don’t remember him being involved in sports during high school. It sounds like there’s a niche for everyone at USC. It doesn’t sounds like some of the schools in the south who literally BREATHE football, especially during the fall season. Not to say that Trojan fever doesn’t rub off on even those who claimed to never like the sport. Maybe it’s just more about the school spirit and feeling of “family”.

NYU’s an urban campus - Don’t go there if you’re looking for the traditional college experience. The area around it isn’t bad, but there will be a few strange individuals around. Just don’t feel intimidated by them and ignore them, and you’ll be fine.

Personally, I can’t wait to head over to USC (from NYC). :)

there’s no city like Los Angeles either…

I’ve visited NYU a few times (haha not hard to do for NYC residents)
the dorms (at least the ones I went to) were actually really good

there is no “official campus” but once you step into the area, you’ll know it’s NYU

I think taylor has it spot-on: sports and greek life have little to no importance to NYU students.

If you’re choosing between one or the other in terms of pure education, you can’t go wrong either way

good luck!
I’d do anything for being able to choose between the two. And by anything, I mean anything.

So…
NYU gave me horrible financial aid. I’m so not taking out loans of 27k per year when my expected family contribution is 0 and my parent’s income bracket is 20,000. And they apparently give horrible fa to everyone.
So it will probably be USC… just hoping that they give me good financial aid!

I picked USC because I’m a presidential, and I got great aid. NYU gave me a decent amount, but nowhere near how generous USC was with me, especially with an EFC of 20,000.

Also, the only good thing about NYU is the city, NYC. Other than that weather, student life, selectivity, and academia trump NYU.
