Help! USC transfer from community colleges

I’m a California community college student looking to transfer to USC for the fall of 2019, and I have attended two different community colleges since starting college, one with the semester system, and the other, quarter.
I am currently a communications major and I have A’s in all of my major specific classes, but I am thinking of switching to business/marketing (I am currently taking an intro to Business course and doing well; I have a high A and I expect to get an A in the course)

I have a few questions about the process and I was wondering if any of you could help me out.

  1. I took econ last year at a community college and got a C in the class, and I am planning on taking it next quarter (winter) at a separate school, which is the one that I am applying to schools through. I know that USC does not accept "academic renewal" for courses to be retaken for a better grade towards GPA, but would it positively affect their decision to see that I retook it for an A?
  2. How much does USC weigh the importance of GPA in general ed classes vs. major classes? My transcript has shown improvement, and there is only one semester where I did poorer than the others, but I will mention in my personal statement that I was working a lot and how I showed improvement since then. I understand that USC takes a holistic approach, and I am confident that my personal statement will be very strong.
  3. Will a W affect the admissions decision too much? It's easily justified: I took an intro to Public Speaking class at one school, and at the second school, the counselor said that the course did not articulate, so I had to take it again. However, part way through the semester, I met with the articulations director at my school, and she told me that the Public Speaking course did articulate, so I dropped it and added a late start class that counts towards general ed.

Thank you!

Admissions is competitive. You should expect to have a 3.8 GPA plus extra-curriculars. There are only so many spots and plenty of qualified students. USC is a solid choice for business and communications but I would apply to a range of schools. Keep in mind that about 700 of the 2900-3000 freshmen admitted in recent years have had completely perfect transcripts.

Most schools do not allow you to ''retake" a “C” class because it is a passing grade. I don’t know how USC will handle that.
Anything D or F, you can retake.
