Hey everyone, I am a long time reader of these boards and this is my first time actually posting. Anyways, I was accepted into Cornell Engineering and with AP tests approaching fast I was just curious from a current students perspective if it is worth it to pass out of certain classes at Cornell. Just as a preface, I plan on majoring in Computer Science.

Is it worth it to pass out of Math 1910, and does 1920 build off of it because my teacher for BC was so bad and I feel like although I can get the credit for 1910, series and sequences are still iffy for me from BC. Also, I can pass out of physics 1112, and I am taking E/M exam this year, and I am wondering if it is worth it to pass out of 1112 and 2213(if I end up doing well on the AP exam). Also, I can pass out of Chem 2090, but I was wondering if it is worth it to take this class again to brush on chemistry because I had AP Chem my junior year and it has been a while. Finally, I am taking AP Comp Sci test this year, and if I do well on it, would it be worth it to pass out of it at Cornell(considering that is my major).

Sorry for the long-winded post, but basically I am just in need of some insight. Thanks so much in advanced for the help!

First, if you’re not sure whether you know the material well enough even if you have a qualifying AP score, you can take the CASE exams during orientation week to see if what you know matches up with what Cornell expects you to know.

Also, when you decide on which classes to take credit for, think about your major. So if you’re not going to take any more chemistry classes, for example, just take the credit. But if it’s something like Comp Sci that you’ll be majoring in, you should really make sure you know your stuff before moving on in the sequence.

Really it’s just up to you to decide if you know the material well enough not to re-do it and if you’ll need to build off of what you’ll learn. I’m in almost the same situation as you - I have a 5 on chem and should have 5s on calc BC and both physics C tests, and I’m planning on being a MechE major. I think I’ll probably take the credit for chem, BC, and mechanics, and re-take E&M freshman year.

The intro engineering classes suck. Def. use chem credit (you’re a MechE) and chem isn’t very useful for you. As for physics, definitely use both of them as well - if you’re worried about not being prepared just quickly review physics over the summer or something - the intro courses here are a LOT of work. As for math 1910, definitely skip it. That class is VERY tough and my friends who had BC credit but didn’t use it all regret it. If you’re worried about 1920, just review some of it before the summer. You don’t need to any series stuff by the way - just know integration by parts / polar / parametric calculus very well.
