I need some help.. I'm trying to decide if I want to attend Vanderbilt or a school who's CS program is more well known. It's not that I've heard it's bad, I've just honestly never heard anything! My other top option would be Georgia Tech, but I am in love with Vanderbilt as a school. Please tell me anything you know! I just want to be reassured it would be a good overall experience. Thanks!

Hey man, I’m majoring in CS at Vandy and I enjoy it. Obviously Georgia Tech would be a better choice if your really serious about CS and they probably have a lot of things Vandy doesn’t because it’s an engineering focused school. But Vanderbilt has a lot of other things that I enjoy aside from academics (e.g. campus landscaping, social life, nice facilities, decent sports teams, etc.). Let me know if you have any other specific questions and I’ll do my best to answer.

Loving your school is SO much more important than loving your school’s ranking for your major.

I personally turned down several schools with higher ranked programs in my major and couldn’t be happier. I don’t think my initial job prospects will be any worse with a Vanderbilt degree than they would with a degree from, say, a less prestigious school that happens to be highly ranked in my major.

in this economy, consider your costs as a major factor. If you can pay instate rates to GA Tech and you can’t really afford your EFC calculated rate at Vandy without suffering, go to Tech. The work force is tough out there and graduate degrees are expensive. If you can afford Vandy and can get in, that is another story. Ga Tech would still be there for a masters degree if you are a Georgian. Lots of Georgians apply to Vanderbilt, always have --but the $$ numbers on UGA Honors vs GA Tech vs Vandy EFC costs lead many fine students into taking up their state college offers. You have to keep finanical costs forward in your decision making. We have the same issues in Virginia when there are cross admits to Vandy/Duke/Emory and fine liberal arts colleges. Virgina and VA Tech and Wm and Mary deliver a lot of excellence for instate rates
