Help! Varsity Sports and College Admissions

Hello,

I'm a sophomore and have been playing tennis at a high level for eight years. I was on the varsity team this year and as a freshman, and am expected to take the leading singles position and probably captain next year. Would it hurt my application to quit school tennis for the next two years?

My reasons: I commute to a public school in a different town. I'm primarily an academic student and artist/writer, and put these things before tennis. The commute coupled with tennis practices will put me under a lot of time stress next year. My coach is also slightly maniacal. I don't feel that tennis at my high school is as much of a "team sport" as I would like it to be. Things are all too serious at times, and coach has NO tolerance. I just feel that without tennis, I would have a third of my summer and so many extra hours during the fall to excel in other extracurriculars.

I would continue playing in USTA tournaments and probably advance to regionals/sectional championships with my league team.

Please help. I have to keep college in mind, obviously, but I don't know how much of a negative quitting might be on my resume!

It is OK to drop HS tennis if you are no longer interested. You have enough things in your schedule. Lots of students reduce the number of activities that they participate in, so that they have time to concentrate on things that they really care about.
