My daughter is still undecided-she likes different things about each school. We live in Connecticut, so Villanova is closer; brother is in another NC school for one more year next year (these are pluses). She will probably major in a science-possibly premed; would like to be on some type of dance team, but worried about time commitment if team is too competitive. NC weather a plus over Philly. In Villanova honors with some merit money. Any ideas on variety of class offerings at either and how easy it is to get into more popular choices? Any info on either would be appreciated.

This is such an individualized decision. D is a 2010 Wake grad and proud to be a Demon Deacon! When she was deciding on schools, Villanova was in the mix for a while, but she vastly preferred WFU. I’m sure both schools have a wide variety of courses – has your D looked at the (online) course catalogs? I don’t think there’s any school out there where students are guaranteed to always get their first choice of class/section – especially as a freshman. Wake does course registration online, according to a lottery of assigned times. Incoming freshmen will be registering after all the upper classmen, who are signing up this spring for fall classes. Scheduling is trickier for students taking science courses with labs. For example, a Monday afternoon lab could be at the same time as an English class that meets M,W,F.

Where are you in CT? We’re near Hartford, so there are no direct flights to Greensboro. D became very proficient at the whole changing planes thing!

Good luck to your D wherever she ends up!

Thanks for the course catalogue suggestion-will check into it! We are closer to Danbury/Bridgeport; my son is in NC at school so we are familiar with Greensboro airport. We usually have to fly from NY if we want a nonstop flight-love Greensboro airport though!

I think LaGuardia has non-stop flights to Greensboro although I could be wrong (and also I don’t know if you’re particularly close). I’m from New Jersey and I’ve never had a huge problem with the distance, although everyone is much different in that respect.

A while ago I responded to a similar Nova/Wake post – we have a few Nova transfers who all didn’t really have pleasant experiences, although to each his own. When I visited there I was a bit suffocated by the religious aspects of it and the “Villa-No-Fun” reputation, but I have friends who go there and seem to enjoy it.

Our pre-med program here is pretty good I believe, although I cannot offer specific information since I am terrible at science. Wake really prepares students for the MCATs. The program is difficult and vigorous but I think it’s a good preparation for med school. I do know a bit more about the dance team; would she be looking into Dance Company or Dance Team or both?

Definitely look into the course catalog – as a heads up it’s on the WFU website under “Undergraduate Course Bulletin” usually :)

Thanks for the info. She would be more interested in the dance team, but wondered if there was more than one as she is concerned about the time commitment being a science major.

Dance Team time commitment depends on which team you make, I believe. I think it’s divided into two teams – Gold & White. White is a less competitive team; there’s still a lot of practicing but I get the feeling that it isn’t as stressful. I could be wrong about some of this as I am not a dancer, but that’s my best guess at it.

Science is hard here but it’s definitely not impossible … especially if you’re good at it. Yeah, cell bio will probably be hard regardless, but if you’re good at science it won’t be that bad. The people who most complain about the pre-med program are the ones who don’t want to major in a science/aren’t that great at science to begin with.

I know there are girls on the Dance Team & in Dance Company who are chemistry and business majors; I suppose it’s all how you manage your time.

We are mailing our deposit today to Wake Forest! She’ll work out the dance team thing I’m sure. Happy the decision was finally made and happy with her choice!!

YAAAAAAAAAY! Congratulations!!! If you have any questions about the dance team in particular I can put her in contact with someone who is on it; one of my friends is always willing to talk to prospectives and I am more than willing to give you her email address.

Congrats again Yay!

That would be great-could you pm me with her e-mail address? Thanks!
