HELP: Waitlist at CIT for Electrical and Computer Engineering (no room on wait list)

Hey guys, I am in a dilemma right now, because I was wait listed by CIT for EECE and it says they anticipate no wait list openings, but they offered me a spot on the priority wait list... here is what the letter says:

"Unfortunately, we do not anticipate any wait list openings in Electrical and Computer Engineering. As a result, your name has been placed on a waiting list for the other departments in the Carnegie Institute of Technology. These departments include Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, as well as our double major programs in Engineering & Public Policy and Biomedical Engineering."

Does this mean, if I accept a priority wait list spot, I can only be admitted off of it if I choose a different major besides EECE? Or is the priority wait list different in terms of anticipating admission for certain majors from the list? I have already been accepted at UC Berkeley and will most likely be going there, but I want to try for CMU as well, because I'm not sure which is better for me (given location, private vs public, # of students, etc.). And if I am admitted from the priority wait list for a different major like Mechanical Engineering, can't I just re-declare my major to Electrical and Computer Engineering as a Freshman?

Help please.

I got the same thing. It means even if you get off the waitlist you will NOT be able to major in ECE. If you have your mind set on ECE, I would decline the waitlist offer and just go to Berkeley. That way you can major in exactly what you want to, and both schools will give you a great education.

I was rejected from ECE, but now I’m an ECE major. The intro to ECE freshman course is a weed-out course, so a lot of people drop out. If you do well in it, you most likely have a chance. I had the same dilemma “should I go to CMU without knowing I could do what I want, instead of a school that was free-tuition”.

Ok thanks @MLG360. And are you currently at CMU @Selena731 ? And how difficult was the pathway that you took to become an ECE major after being rejected from ECE? And can you take the ECE freshman course without declaring your major as ECE?

I’m currently an ECE major at CMU, yes…
It was pretty difficult more because of the workload and the difficulty of the work. I had to get extra help to get by sometimes.
Everyone in CIT is undeclared until Spring of freshman year, and you’re required to take into to any two engineering courses, so yes, you can take intro to ECE before you declare your major officially in spring.
