Help! Waivering P and Y

It's down to the wire and my stomach is churning. I'm a tiger legacy (dad) and have grown up hearing about the wonders of Princeton (I've been to the P-rade many times, alumni family days, etc.). I really do love it and always assumed I would go, too, if my qualifications were good enough.

Problem is last year I attended a Model UN at Yale and fell totally head over heels crazy in love with Yale. I loved the campus, the grittyish urban environment and all it offered in off campus diversion and literally everyone I met and stayed with. This year I got deferred from Y SCEA (so I thought it was over) and then accepted this month; I also got into Princeton.

Parents are basically leaving it up to me ( we don't qualify for financial aid) but I can tell by Dad's face that he STRONGLY would prefer I follow in his footsteps. He has been scaring me with stories of New Havens "dangers", only half kidding.

I will probably be some sort of humanities major, so I think the schools offerings are about equal. I did both the P preview and bulldog days, and again, I just felt more at home at Yale. I think part of it is that I grew up in the city, and love the city, and we moved to an affluent suburban town a couple of years. I really just don't like preppie suburbs very much.

Yale just seemed more diverse in terms of social circles, a little more liberal, a tad more intellectual, and maybe a little more off-beat, which I love.

Reassure me that I'm not making a mistake by voting blue. Any of you have a hard time choosing between Yale in Princeton in the past?

if you read my thread i just posted like yesterday, i am basically going through a similar situation. i just felt more home at yale, too even though everyone around me basically either wants me or assumes i will choose princeton. i think i’m going to yale. PM me if you want!

I had a really easy time choosing between Yale and Princeton - it sounds like you are too. Go with your heartttttttt yayaya!!

Ha serendipityyy and I had a conversation last night about that decision because we’re both prospective students making the same choice (actually, I already made mine). PM me if you want as well. What parts of Princeton don’t you like? What parts of Yale don’t you like?

Or, *lots *more. Good Lord, your decision is already made! Tell your Dad I said to get over himself!

Personally, I’d have a tough time deciding, but my concerns are different from yours. With the things you’ve said, your Dad is the only problem and I already told you what to do about that ;)

I second both eating food’s and Marsden’s sentiments: Go with gut and Yale is definitely more wrinkled, eccentric and therefore more interesting.

My daughter had the same choice. She is also a humanities type student. She was strongly inclined to choose Yale over Princeton but she decided to go to preview days and bulldog days anyway to give both a fair chance. After the visits, it was a no-brainer. She accepted Yale for many of the same reasons that you cite.

Think of it this way- you can make your Dad happy by going to Princeton or you can make your future children happy that you made them Yale legacies instead of Princeton legacies  So the generation before and generation after cancel each other out. So what is left is what you feel is right!

I just pulled the plug and I guess I am going to New Haven in a few months.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and help! I am the most excited I have been in my life!!!

Dad’s being a little grumpy – claims his hand just can’t write a $60k check addressed to Yale University – but he’ll get with the program.

Serendipityyyy and msauce – let’s talk soon!

dharmatic: congratulations! you made the right decision! my son went through agonies last year over exactly the same choice and he has never looked back–he loves yale! and it sounds like you do, too. (the father issue is well understood–my son’s father took his undergrad degree at harvard and has had just a little bit of trouble adjusting  get ready for an amazing four years!

It sounds like you should choose yale. The things that you want are the reasons that I chose yale.

dharmatic you should add us on Facebook. Send me a PM and get on the Yale group.

You made the correcet decision. Yale is best for you. Humanities and Yale are synonyms. Belive me you will be happy at Yale. My son was oscillating between Yale and P for pre-med. So many doctors told him to go to Yale. He chose Yale. P is very college for Math, Physics and eng. I think…Good luck.

i feel a little late to the party since you already chose yale and such, lol

but, congrats on your decision! im a 2014 yalie too, and im beyond stoked for this coming fall!!! did all you guys who got accepted to go BDD?

thatguy100-- i went to bulldog days, and even though i only stayed for one night, i still had a lot of fun! did you?

ya i went, it was amazing! i actually got in on sunday cause thats when my flight worked out, but still i had the best time and made so many friends it was crazy
