HI! I just finished my sophomore year and I am going into my junior year in high school. I finished my sophomore year with a 4.08 weighed gpa and an unweighted gpa of 3.36 (not sure why it’s so low ) I take dance at my school and I plan on taking it for all four years and I am in the advanced level. I play 2 sports: basketball for 2 years at JV level ( I stopped) and softball for 4 years (I plan on playing all through high school) at JV/V level. My extracurriculars are: dance honor society for 2 years, dance club for 4 years, best buddies for 4 years, HIP (a program that educates freshman on drugs and nutrition) for 2 years, link (a program that orientates freshmen) for 2 years, Jewish high holiday choir for 8-9 years (I sing for fun), HOFSA club (biomedical club) for 3 years, HALO organization Vice President (feeds children in Haiti) for 2 years, and I feed the Jewish elderly every thanksgiving. I applied to have a women’s empowerment club at my school but have gotten no answer but if it passes I would be co president and founder and I hope to become an officer in some of the clubs I am currently in and I hope to be in the student body council my senior year and to be inducted into NHS for the next 2 years. I did a study abroad program in Israel for 6 weeks also. I hope to get a job for 2 years to help pay for college. I hope to score a 28-30 on my ACT and NYU is my dream school. I wanted to know my chances of getting in and if I have a good one and my chances of getting a scholarship since I know they rarely give out. I have 2 other sisters and I want to help pay for my tuition with a job. I’m also interested in Tulane as well and Boston university and wanted to know my chances there and of getting scholarship there. Any tips for helping to get a scholarship at any of these schools, especially NYU, would be helpful and any knowledge on my admission chances. Thank you so much!
Caps means you are yelling.
I know this is your first post, but please avoid caps.
You don’t have test scores which are crucial for admissions estimates. Being “hopeful” isn’t a test score, but you can hope for better than 28-30 if you want a better chance of getting admitted. You need scores beyond 28-30 to get chances at scholarships.
NYU is $72K per year and are known for having the worst financial aid. BU isn’t as expensive, but your scholarship chances aren’t that much better. If you know now, that you are relying on financial aid to attend college, then you need to start looking at schools that will provide decent financial aid for your grades and possible test scores and those schools you’ve listed, aren’t in those categories.
Start looking at your instate options if you will need financial aid.
Ok I’ll avoid caps hahah! Besides scholarships, do you think I have a solid chance of getting admitted to NYU if my GPA rose to a 4.2?
Your ECs are good but your unweighted GPA is quite low. You would need to raise that significantly or score exceptionally on the ACT for a solid chance at NYU. Even then, given the fact you have two siblings, is NYU’s pricetag really right for you? I was admitted to NYU myself but had to decline given the fact that our cost of attendance would’ve been more than $30k more than the FAFSA’s estimated family contribution. They do not give good financial aid.
BU is also a reach school I would say although it is hard to tell since you don’t have ACT/SAT scores. Their avg GPA and ACT are fairly high.
Please understand that a weighted GPA is not that valuable for colleges (someone correct me if I’m wrong). For example, my high school weighted GPA was a 6.47 while yours seems to be weighted out of a total of 5.0. There is not a standard weighting system and so while your HS says you have a weighted of ____, colleges will look at your courses and weight them themselves based on their own system.
How how do I raise my unweighted? My grades are high As and Bs, I never have Cs but I don’t understand why it is so low… my sister plays basketball and probably will get a full ride somewhere and my other sister got a scholarship to where she is going. I really want to go to NYU or Tulane (more than BU)… are my chances better at Tulane than NYU?
Also also if everything goes right my junior year, my unweighted should rise to a 3.7-3.8 and weighted to a 4.2 not sure if that helps??
A b+ average translates to about a 3.3 unweighted. Raising it to a 3.7-3.8 is not an easy task because your grades will need to be very high for junior year - pretty much a 4.0
If you score a 30 on your ACT, you have a shot at NYU and Tulane provided you raise your GPA.
