Help! What are my options?!

I'm new to this forum, and I wasn't sure where to post this question, but was told to try here. My husband went to college for four semesters, and he ended with a horrible GPA and on academic probation--that was three years ago. As school fell apart, he joined the Army and now that he knows what he's doing with his life, he's trying to figure out what his options are to finish his bachelor's. From what I understand, you can't just start over as a freshman if you've attended a university previously. Is this correct? He has the choice to complete an Associates degree based on the military classes he's taken, but if he does nothing, after he gets out of the army in two years, would he be considered a non-traditional student in most places? Or should he finish his Associates and show a great GPA from that? Going back to his previous institution is not an option, but he is trying to get into the best school possible with a bad track record, and he doesn't know how to do it! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Congrats to your H. He can’t just forget about his previous time in school. But he will definitely be considered a non-traditional student with his time in the military. Any essays or interviews will be important for him to emphasize how he has grown during his time since college. I would definitely look at finishing the AA using the military classes. Where does he want to go to school?

He should definitely take advantage of the opportunity to complete his AA now. When he does apply for transfer, he will need to provide copies of his bad old transcripts, but the admissions offices will take into account that he is older, wiser, and a much better candidate than he was years ago.

At the top of this forum, you will find a link to the Veterans sub-forum. The folks there will be able to give him some more specific advice.

Wishing both of you all the best.
