OK so I’m an undergraduate student at Davis and this is my first quarter here…I was just wondering that , God forbid , what if someone fails his/her classes? Say you have some Workload class , a seminar , calculus , and one other solid 4 unit class related to your major…What if say you fail Calculus and other 4 unit solid class? While you pass workload and seminar etc…what can happen in that case? Would Davis kick you out? Or they’ll take some other actions? Does messsing up in first quarter effects your financial aid too? HELP!

************** bump **************

You’ll be put on academic probation if your GPA is below 2.0, but above 1.5. When you are put on academic probation, you’ll get a notification from your dean’s office that you’ve been put on academic probation with the suggestion to see a counselor regarding your academic progress. I HIGHLY recommend making an appointment with an academic counselor as soon as you can–don’t put it off like I did (I was on academic probation for two quarters, with a 1.8 GPA in winter quarter and a 1.9 GPA in spring. So close to getting out of probation, too! I didn’t see an academic counselor until the beginning of this fall quarter because I thought I could fix my problem areas myself). If your GPA is below a 1.5, you’ll be subject to academic disqualification, and you HAVE to visit your dean’s office to discuss why you might be failing.

What is the difference between Academic Probation and Academic Disqualification? The word “disqualification” seems scary … :/

You’re more likely to get kicked out of UCD if your standing is “subject to academic disqualification”. With probation, you get a chance to improve. A staff advisor for my major said she once had a student who was on academic probation for six quarters or something before she finally realized that the major she was in wasn’t right for her and switched to a different one. If you’re academically disqualified, that’s it. There were a few transfers in my dorm building last year that got academically disqualified in fall quarter since they didn’t take their education all too seriously.

For more info on the academic disqualification process, should it ever happen (and let’s hope it never happens to you): http://daviswiki.org/Academic_Standing

@sopranokitty: then do you know what happens to your financial aid if this happens? I really need financial aid in order to stay at Davis, and I’m afraid this might happen to me.

@ kika2012: I’m currently on academic probation, and my financial aid hasn’t been affected drastically, though the amount of financial aid I have is reduced and not nearly the same amount as I had last year since I’m now in my 2nd year at UC Davis (technically, I’m a senior in terms of units, but since I transferred in in fall 2011, this is my second year of actually being at Davis) and has nothing to do with my academic probation status.

@sopranokitty: So what I’m understand is that your financial aid didn’t get taken away when you had a 1.8 GPA in winter quarter and a 1.9 GPA in spring. (?) Instead, your financial aid is decreased next school year?

@ kika: It may be different for those who entered UCD as freshmen, but mine’s decreased since the 2012-2013 is “supposed” to be the final year for fall 2011 transfers like me (expected graduation date for fall 2011 transfer students is supposed to be Spring 2013, but I don’t expect to graduate until winter or spring 2014 since not taking O-Chem at community college set me back a year).

But yes, my financial aid did not get taken away.
