I am a concerned parent with an out-of-state tuition bill and a son that would like to join. So many BRAND NEW houses going up and wondering what the cost would be to join a social fraternity. Any parents out there that can shed some light?? Please. Need some realistic numbers to crunch!
If you look around on the info for greek life, there is a page with the cost estimates. I have been looking for my daughter. The highest for sororities from last year was $6500 per semester. I have been crunching the numbers as well. I may be wrong, but the way that I see it is that it comes out to be about an extra $5,000(plus your regular tuition, room and board) for the most expensive one. If a current student/parent could add to this, that would be great.
It can be expensive, but since the student gets a huge food plan discount, it’s not as bad as it seems.
Once a student pledges, his meal plan is reduced to the Greek plan, which saves abut $1000 per semester.
There are a few fraternities that are not housed, and thus are much cheaper. You can go to individual websites to figure out which ones. Go either here ofsl.sa.ua.edu/councils/ifc/ or here http://alabamaifc.com/main.html to look at the websites. Good luck, and Roll Tide!
I shared some of that information in another thread, beginning here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19767155/#Comment_19767155
