@mom2collegekids YES!! I am interested in UA. And yeah I plan to do everything this week lol
Ok…I’ll send you a PM
Good luck!
A family member of mine went to two years of Community College and then transferred to a great state school. Everyone STILL calls him Dr./MD.
I doubt anyone knows at all that he went to a CC and he was offered entry into multiple state and private medical schools.
^But many med schools don’t like CC credits for the premed core, because these classes tend to be less in-depth. So, that means fewer med schools OP would be able to apply to (or where her odds would be ok). While it’s possible to get into med school starting from a CC, it decreases the odds.
If OP has a possibility of attending UAB, UA, or Temple, she should definitely go for it. At least sending the app in and seeing what happens, rather than waiting and having to go the CC route.
@carachel2 I believe you. Surely there are many MDs who did the CC to BS to MD route. How old is your relative?
However, competition for admission to MD schools has become far more difficult in recent years. Many of us know MDs that never had to do any research or shadowing or “medically related ECs”. In fact, many MDs scratch their heads when they hear what hoops recent MD applicants have had to jump thru.
Yeah the transition from community college to rutgers is going to be brutal. I know that I can still become a doctor but I would rather go a university any day.
I am mostly looking at colleges with a full ride as compared to only full tuition because being out of state still means I have to pay about 20,000$ a year. So what colleges match up to my act score of 32?
Full tuition is for out of state too. So at Temple, your tuition is free (and Alabama). No out if state add ons.
It does leave room and board.
@HRSMom Yeah but the cost still comes close to 20,000$ so I am primarily thinking about schools with full rides.

University Scholarships
@HRSMom THANKS! So far from the list I have:
- Troy University
- Tuskegee University
- Alabama State University
- Howard University
the cost is more like $15k…the COAs have pad…and often include pricier dorms
I’d go the CC-> Rutgers route rather than Troy, Tuskegee, or Alabama State route.
Howard’s full rides are gone.
Op,you’re applying very late, most full rides’ deadlines were Dec 1st. So, you have to be flexible and look at full tuition scholarships. It means your 15K budget + federal loan. There’s worse.
@Upenngirl98 - As a NJ resident, Rowan University in Glassboro would be an excellent option for you. I think it gets overshadowed by Rutgers and other NJ schools, but it is growing in reputation and there is lots of new construction and $$ being invested there at the moment.
We have a family friend who is a biology professor at Rowan and she thinks very highly of her students and the administration there. She has a gorgeous lab in their brand new science complex. It would be an excellent school for premed, with solid science and engineering programs, and not far from Philly, good internship opportunities there. It is a nice medium sized school, big enough, but not overwhelmingly huge, approx. 10K undergrads.
My youngest daughter was recently accepted as a marketing major with a 32 ACT and was offered $15K in merit, she is OOS, but with that merit, Rowan may still end up being far cheaper than our own state U. Total tuition, fees, room and board is 25K In State, but you would very likely get some decent scholarship$$ with your stats(full tuition or close to it, maybe more). The deadline to apply and still be considered for scholarships is January 31st.

Info on Temple’s larger scholarships-same daughter also offered full tuition there-

As another poster stated, it says new test scores won’t be considered after Jan 15th, but it does not clearly state a deadline, call them and find out if there is still time to apply for the freshman scholarships. You may not have much time to do this!!
Good luck to you:)
Indeed, if you haven’t already, apply to Rowan and TCNJ (NOT biology for TCNJ).
Room and board at Alabama is NOT $20,000 a year.
Are you comfortable with the idea of attending an HBCU?
Agree with @thumper1 and @mom2collegekids
Alabama has a low room & board comparatively. (~12k). It varies widely among schools and can be a significant difference sometimes.
Also, be aware that a scholarship that pays R&B can be taxed, and that may make a difference when comparing as well.
