Help....Where should I apply??

Hi parents, I am a 17'er from India. I was recently seeing the Parents section and saw some rejection stories which really scared me. I was just wondering about my college list, and I would appreciate if the parents here could tell me more about the colleges I should apply to.
I know I have created chance threads before, but I didnot get any concrete advice as of what to do.

This is my list of colleges( rough list )

7.Pennstate
8.Princeton U
9.UCLA

11.U Illinois Urbana(EA)
12.U Michigan (EA)
13.Harvard
14.Purdue
16.Caltech
17.USC
18.Rice

Finances are not a problem, the above list is not final, will decide thr final list on your opinions.

To all the parents: Congrats to all the parents whose children have excelled in the recent admissions process and all the best to the parents whose children are yet to apply :)

Anyone???

I am not sure whether you are male or female. If female, add the women’s colleges, and, if into engineering, specifically Smith, and/or into math, Smith and Bryn Mawr.

If you apply to Stanford SCEA, are you allowed to apply to the other three schools EA? (I’m no expert, but I don’t think so.)

Your list has schools with very different characteristics - how did you come to make it up?

I see you list your family income as $25k. If you are willing to share, how are finances not a problem?

Stanford SCEA does not restrict applying EA to public schools.
[Restrictive Early Action : Stanford University](http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/application/decision_process/restrictive.html)

Oh, I just got a scholarship in my city by my coaching institute FIITJEE (IITJEE Prep) for getting good rank in their scholarship exam. Plus, my family is quite big so they are supporting and financing my education ( even though, I will apply for finaid at need blinds).

Yes, I can apply EA to public schools even under restrictive action :)

I am a male, and I am intrested in MechE. but I may plan on doing a minor in buisness( not really sure, just a thought).
Any suggestions are welcome, I have come to respect the CC community a lot nowadays.

Also, Can I think of GTech; UIUC; PennState as a safety, suggestions are welcome. :)

Not sure if anything on your list can truly be a safety for anyone, especially since engineering divisions or majors may be more selective than the university overall.

If cost is a concern, you may want to consider some less expensive universities that have decent mechanical engineering reputations, some of which may be less selective as well:

University of Minnesota Twin Cities
University of Washington Seattle
Washington State University
North Carolina State University
Arizona State University
Florida State University*
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University*
Virginia Polytechnic and State University
Louisiana State University

*Two universities that have a shared engineering division.

As I stated above, Cost is really not a concern. I will just apply for finaid at the need blinds.

Financial aid is very limited for international students.

“Need blind” does not mean that they will actually give financial aid; it means that the admissions decision will not consider need in the decision. Of course, admissions with insufficient financial aid is effectively a rejection.

I am not one to ask; my kids do not have such ambitions, but what is the concern? I think you are saying price is no object, and you already have about eighteen schools . You want to add? You want to take some off?

That is what I meant, if it does not harm my application, why not apply for it
I really DON’T need any finaid, I am a full pay student. I was just hoping that thr people here could help me on my college list.

@ucbalumunus, do you think GTech or UIUC is not my safety, why?? I checked that I have scores above 75 percentiles of both the colleges:

collegeapps.about.com/od/collegeprofiles/p/UIUC_Profile.htm

“That is what I meant, if it does not harm my application, why not apply for it?”

If price is no object, and you can do a great job with, and attend to, the deadlines of 18 plus applications, I guess there is little reason not to. Sounds nice! Don’t know anybody like that in real life! Maybe risk of rejection is a concern? Good luck!

FWIW, my D was rejected from UCLA, admitted to UCB, and will graduate from Duke in May. We are full pay, but price mattered.

^It is not a final list, just a rough one.
Btw, congrats for your D’s acceptance from such great schools!!

Why aren’t you applying to IIT?

HI Mrinal- have you considered Drexel in Philadelphia? They have a good engineering school, its located in a major US city, and you may qualify for merit scholarships there with your high SAT scores and grades. Plus, there are a lot of international students there.

Another things that sets Drexel apart from the other schools on your list is the coop program which gets you experience in your field while you go to school. Here is a link, check it out. Also, Drexel is a free application. [Drexel Engineering](http://drexel.edu/engineering/)
