Help, Which dorm would suit me?

I am looking for a quiet dorm that would suit me best. I'm applying for the sciences at SBU and may be interested in Pre-med. (I understand that the Roth Quad fills up relatively fast, and was wondering where I should put as a backup) I was wondering what dorm I should look at for being close to the science department obviously, but also one that would suit my quiet, non-partying needs. Yes, I'm going to Stony Brook to be a nerd and all that.

I heard from a friend at the Kelly Quad who lives in a suite that there is no security and so there is a lot of noise.

I also read somewhere along this forum that the H-Quad generally is farther away from the science buildings.

Besides that, I don't know much else.

H-quad is exactly what youre looking for

I wish there is a guide to all dorms, which list all the pros and cons of each dorm...

Which is the best corridor style with cleanliness in mind?

Galiath: I find H-Quad to be very quiet, especially Langmuir (24-hour quiet hours). I think the distance to the science buildings are pretty similar with any other quad. :)

Keleso: The best corridor style with cleanliness in mind would be Mendelsohn in my humble opinion.

Mgccl: I have made a guide to all dorms at one point, but they are from my experiences of visiting each place. I only live in Roosevelt, so I'd be an expert in that one quad. I will post it up regardless in a bit.

Kelly is where a lot of stuff goes down, the footcourt is right there, and people like to fight there all the time, cops are there a lot.

Roosevelt is like the ghetto, basically.

Tabler has a lot of weirdos and such, a lot of parties go down there.

Roth is nice, but mostly athletes and lucky people get in there. Nothing really special about it though, just AC, which you don't really need.

H-Quad is nice, but the bathrooms are nasty, and I personally do not like the layout, and the look, very grimy.

Mendelsohn is really nice, and I live there now, and I find it to be very quiet, and peaceful, besides my roommates who don't go to class. Mendy is where all the "Nerds" and "Asians" live.

I find it to be very clean as well, and good people, well, maybe because my building is a cooking one, and people like to clean up after themselves.

Mendy is definitely your best bet for a corridor, plus it's the biggest. Suite style isn't a good idea for a freshman, because of the tripling.

The science buildings aren't far. Mendy is actually the closest to the Chem/Old Chem buildings, and the Earth and Space Science building. It's a little far from social science though.

Mendelsohn sounds like a cool place. I just put it (accidentally) as my second choice, with Roosevelt as my first, and meant to put it as last. Kelly is third choice, and Tabler is fourth. D:

I'll call them about it before I submit my deposits.

stay AWAY from roosevelt. There is a huge construction site next to it and the place resembles a shanty town. It is widely known as the "ghetto" by the students here. Other than that, H-quad and mendelsohn are the "elite" dorms at stony brook. They are newer buildings and have more amenities, like proximity to the union, tenis courts near by, grass areas, etc. It makes for the walk to class much more pleasant, as opposed to roosevelt and kelly, where you cross constructions, parking lots, etc...

I got put into mendelsohn and I guess I'm pretty happy about it. I visited the quad today and pretty much the whole place was silent. (Maybe because it's the weekend)

I got accepted to Stoneybrook and the only thing holding me back is the dorms. I have heard they are terrible and that they triple people up in doubles. I would hate to end up in a school where I felt like I was living in a ghetto. So how bad is it really?

I just got into stony brook as a transfer student and I have a few questions about hosuing before I make my deposit. As a transfer student do I have a choice as to whether or not I want to stay in a regular dorm or a suite ? And am I able to pick what dorm building I want to stay in? Also I’m going to visit stony on Saturday for a tour, is part of the tour showing the how the dorm rooms are set up, because that can really break or make my decision as of going there? Lastly as a transfer student I heard I’m likely to get roommates that are freahmans, how true is that ?

If you looking for a quiet dorm I would suggest to check the option for 24/7 quiet buildings in your room selection process. Every quad has a 24/7 quiet policy which the RAs of the building enforces them.

I live in one of the 24/7 quiet rooms (roosevelt quad) and I can pretty much study without getting distracted by outside noise. But most of the time I simply study outside my dorm since I feel too comfortable in my room.
