HELP! Which graduate program would be best fit?

I would like to start by saying, thank you to whom ever reads this post and gives advice. It is greatly appreciated!

I graduated with a B.S in biology almost 8 years ago. After graduation, I looked for a job in my field, but I was unsuccessful. I decided to pursue my love for cosmetology, and have been for the past 7 years.

Although I do love cosmetology, I am also now interested in nutrition and wellness, and starting my own business.

I’m seriously considering an MBA or MS in Nutrition. I’ve been researching the job market for both, and would like to hear any sound advice on the realities of getting hired with a biology/MBA and opportunities as a nutritionist in the world today.

I enjoy working with people in a team environment, teaching and helping others to live their best life and, helping others to build their brand.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on what would be a good route to take?

Thank you in advance for your time!

I think an MS in Nutrition would be great to do in your case!

Or maybe even Nursing if you’re so inclined.

Thank you for the advice sciencenerd!!! I have looked into public health nursing as well! I will keep that in mind.

With the Biology background food science and nutrition fits very well.

It depends on what you really want to do.

If you want to start a business, you don’t necessarily need a master’s in either; what you need is a business plan and an idea that is marketable and will actually bring in some money.

If you are interested in working with others in a team environment, then starting your own business might not be the best goal for right now - because that involves striking out on your own for at least a bit.

There’s a difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist. Anyone can legally call themselves a nutritionist; there’s no legal regulation on it. Obviously nutritionists who work for companies (universities, private corporations, nonprofits, hospitals, etc.) usually have some better vetted backgrounds, and there are some organizations that certify nutritionists. Generally, nutritionists do more macro-level work, not individual nutrition counseling, although that varies. Registered dietitians (RD) are professionals who have specific educational and licensing requirements. They are the ones who are usually providing one-on-one assistance helping people by translating food science into nutritional advice and expertise - but they can also do macro-level work like planning the food service at universities, helping grocery stores or restaurants pick health menus, etc.

An MBA is a business degree. If you want to go into nutrition and wellness, a degree in nutrition or dietetics is probably what you really want. An MBA might help you get into management of a company that is concerned with wellness, but you won’t do any direct wellness work yourself.

Thank you for your honesty and advice!
You have definitely given me some things to think about!

You are greatly appreciated!
