Okay, I want to get a combined 5 year degree in Engineering and Business (or a double major if the school doesn't offer combined degrees). I want to work in the field of advertising and it would give me an advantage in the business world if I knew something about engineering. Well the thing is, I don't know if I should apply to the business school, engineering school, or both?!

**ps..What do double majors apply too? How do they do it?

Univ. of Pennsylvania has a combined program, the Jerome Fisher Management/Technology program. Pretty selective. I believe you apply directly to the program at time of admission to Penn. I’m told it is more business than engineering.

Are you wanting to work in the engineering field? Vanderbilt’s School of Engineering offers a minor in engineering management, their most popular minor. Students interested in this minor want to work in the engineering field, but at the business or management end.

The double major question is not something to approach lightly if you are applying to an engineering school. The rules differ a lot depending on the school, and on the particular engineering specialty, as well as the amount of AP or university credits you enter a school with. If your plans definitely require doing more than one major, you need to begin a correspondence with the undergraduate program directors of programs that interest you and clarify your situation.

FWIW, engineering is a pretty demanding field, in general. I don’t know too many people who see themselves as future advertising professionals who would be willing to give engineering studies the necessary effort. The interest level just wouldn’t be there. Take a close look at the required coursework before you leap into anything.
