HELP! WHICH SAT TO TAKE??? (Class of 2017)

I am in the class of 2017, which has the unfortunate distinction of being the guinea pig for College Board’s new SAT. I took the PSAT in October earlier this year, and didn’t do very well (162 :frowning: ). However, I would take a good prep course and put in extensive studying time before I would take the SAT in September or October. My question is, should I wait and just take the new SAT? Will it look strange to colleges that I took the new and old SAT? The old one has lots of prep material while the new one has very little prep material. HELP!!!

I don’t think it will look strange but you probably don’t want to take both. If you are willing to start early and if you plan to prep a lot then I would go for the old SAT. For people who plan to kind of wing it and not study, there is probably an advantage to taking the new SAT since it will be a little more of an even playing field when it first comes out. But if you plan to do a lot of prep then yes, there are a lot of resources and you know exactly what you are preparing for. So I would probably go with the old test given what you indicated above.

@reasonsat‌ @greeneggandham89‌,

My son is also a class of 2017 and I am not familiar with the SAT. From what you guys said, my son can technically take the old SAT and use it when he applies to colleges? I guess if he is prepared, say, by this summer, he can take the old one before the new SAT is launched, right?

@patronyork‌ Yes, your Class of 2017 son could take the old SAT in October, November, December, or January of the 2015-16 school year, and it would still be the “old” SAT. The new one starts in March 2016. Testing on any of the dates can be used when he applies to colleges.

@Ynotgo‌

Thank you so much for your answer!

@patronyork‌ No problem. Feel free to come on over to the Class of 2017 Parents thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/class-20xx-community/1479899-parents-of-the-hs-class-of-2017.html#latest

It’s a pretty quiet group so far, but we’ve had some discussions of Old vs. New SAT and PSAT.

@Ynotgo

Thank you again! I will visit the thread.
