Help, will my financial aid be suspended at another school?

Hi everyone, I think I’ve gotten myself into a bit of a pickle. I was trying to live on-campus at this one university I was accepted to. I didn’t like the housing I was assigned, so I submitted a request to change it and was told I could be switched before school starts, so I continued to make plans to attend the school and made housing payments (they weren’t that much, but allowed me to keep my housing contract in good standing). Anyhow, financial aid is being disbursed soon and I’m pretty sure I won’t get the housing I want. This sadly has made me decide to attend another university that had accepted me for the spring 2016 semester. My question is, how would I go about having my subsidized loan being transferred to this new school? Do I just return anything that is disbursed to me and take out the same loan at the new school? I don’t want to put my Pell Grant, etc. in jeopardy by doing anything wrong. For example, I’m pretty sure the housing contract has a termination fee of about $500, so if I used any part of my loan or aid to settle that expense after withdrawing from the school before returning what is disbursed, I’d risk getting any additional aid at my next school right?

If you intend to study at B, then you need to contact A immediately, cancel your enrollment there, and find out how much of a refund you can get for what you paid for housing at A.

Yes, any part of the costs that were not refundable are costs that you will be responsible for. If they were paid with financial aid money, you will need to pay that aid back.

If you aren’t going to attend school you have to cancel your enrollment and then they will not issue any financial aid or disburse a loan to you. You can’t get a loan from a school you aren’t attending. Only when you enroll can you get on and it has to issue from the school you attend, there is not ‘transferring’ You will have to also cancel your housing and settle with them, if you put a deposit for enrollment likely you will lose it and if you put a deposit for housing likely you will lose it. If you owe a cancellation fee then I suppose they can come after you for that. The new college will have to process paperwork for aid and a loan for you. You need to speak with them to see if there is anything that you need to do.

I have to say I have never heard of a person changing schools because of a minor reason like that. Housing is just temporary and you change the next year anyway. If you can afford to jump though these hoops and lose deposits this late in the game, I suppose it is your prerogative.

Changing schools because of housing sounds like a really weak excuse to change universities. I agree with @BrownParent.

What happened?

And how did you still have an admission from another school? And are you sure you are going to get housing you like there? Usually housing is assigned on a first come first served basis and yes, the best housing is usually gobbled up first. Does this second university even have housing left for late matriculants?

Seriously…weak reason to change schools.

The housing was just the final straw. I’ve had a lot of issues/problems with the university that I overlooked, but I was really counting on getting the housing I wanted. Most of my reasons are pretty silly. For example, school A is over an hour away from where I live and my family doesn’t own a car (my mother is getting on in years and doesn’t drive anymore). School B is no more than a 10-15 minute bus ride away. I liked School A more at first for not deferring me to the spring and being in a really nice area. Since I would be spending most of my time at School A and just about never come home on the weekends, I really just wanted the right type of housing. School B started taking applications for housing in July in the case of spring admits like me, so I might be a little late, but I should be able to get something decent hopefully. I do admit again that it’s a silly reason, but housing was like the only thing I wanted to go my way. Both schools are pretty much regarded as equals in my area, so I don’t think I can go wrong with either.

I’m curious about the exact schools :stuck_out_tongue:

Why are you housing at a school that is only 10-15 minutes away? Seems like a waste of money.
