Help! Winter clothing

Hello, I'll be going to Smith in Mass. and was wondering about clothes. I live in Texas and the winters aren't much (jeans, tennis shoes and a normal zip up hoodie and I'm fine). So suggestions?

I know I need snow boots but what kind? Those fluffy ones with the filling don't appeal to me AT ALL. Alternatives? And is suede bad for a boot? Excuse my ignorance.

The jacket realm, are wool peacoats enough for snow and such or what else?
(I plan on layering like, t shirt, sweater and then ^)

Can I get away with a good scarf without doing the whole earmuffs, scarf and hat thing?

Any suggestions are greatly appreaciated, the more specific the better!

AND: My parents say they would pay for my winter clothing but I'm still trying to keep it as economical as possible. Smith is pricey.

Thank you!

You can spray suede with water proofing stuff but you’d really be off with something water proof. I live in Michigan and a wool peacoat is not necessarily ideal but with layering I think you will be fine, LOTS of people wear them. You can probably get away with a just a scarf, nobody wears ear muffs and hats are seen sporadically. I would consider a coat with a hood if you don’t want to get a hat, it makes a huge difference in comfort if you can keep your ears and cheeks protected from the wind-- they will HURT on a windy winter day. I’ve never owned a scarf in my life so you probably don’t need that unless that’s what you’re using to protect your face.

Leggings can be worn under jeans for extra warmth for those REALLY cold days.

The biggest things for me are keeping my feet dry, having a good coat, layering, and having either a hat or a hood. If you do that you should be fine.

really? I used to live in montana and wore jeans sneakers and a hoodie most of the time.

I find boots to be a waste of money and space.

Get a pair of Uggs <3

As someone from Louisiana who goes to school in Missouri (our winters do get quite cold- 0 degree weather in january… but its the wind thats bad):

A peacoat will be fine for when it’s just getting cold- I like mine for it when it’s hovering at 32 or above. Once it drops below freezing, I break out my heavy coat, that could keep anything warm. My peacoat would not be enough in 0 degree weather.

I don’t have snowboots, and you don’t need them. Sometimes I layer socks and that’s more than fine. The trick is just to keep your feet warm, as an above poster said.

And to the kid from montana a few posts up- that’s because you’ve got thick skin lol. Those of us down here in Texas/Louisiana couldn’t handle a Montana winter (the idea of it scares me quite honestly). But that’s fine. You probably would hate our summers.

Like emahee said, the trick is to keep your feet DRY. There are lots of shoes and boots that are lined with waterproof Goretex. Stay away from cotton socks in the winter…go for wool and/or polypropeline.

When I got out of the U.S. Navy, I went straight to the U of Toronto, and went the whole winter wearing my official Navy peacoat…biggest mistake of my life. Besides not being thick enough, peacoats are too drafty up the sleeves and up the torso. I sewed knit cuffs inside the sleeves, and that helped some. Peacoats are also terrible when it’s cold AND raining. There are are plenty of nylon coats and jackets that have waterproof layer (Goretex or the equivalent) that are great when you need to stay warm AND dry. I also agree with those who said a jacket/coat with a hood will come in handy.

I think most people would suggest waiting until you get to school to buy your winter gear. You won’t need it until November, so that gives you a couple months to see what other people are wearing. Once you see things you like, you’ll be able to buy them in locally or online. In the meantime, check out websites like llbean.com and cabelas.com to get an idea of some of the more affordable stuff.

I live up North, and yep - our winters are BAD.

Let’s see - what do I wear during winter.

People wear different things cos we all have different fashion styles. I wear trench coats, suede boots (walk very slowly), I have trendy caps (which I don’t wear a lot), gloves (which I don’t wear a lot), some regular jackets. Leggings (the thick ones for winter). Turtle necks, and some of my regular clothes (tons of layering).

Most of my stuff isn’t expensive. I still wear some regular clothes during winter (layering). Tons of cute stuff at forever 21. I get denim pants from Vanity or Target (during a sale, some are less than $10), you can also get nice stuff from Target, and similarstores. I get shoes from Payless, Sheikh and any store with something I like. More expensive stuff from Karmaloop and anywhere else (too many to name). I do 85% of my shopping online.

thick skin huh? I lived in Florida before i moved to montana :D

In all honesty just get a nice coat if you get cold easily.
