I absolutely cannot decide between SUNY Binghamton and Delaware! Not only are academics important to me, but so is social life and campus life too! Any advice?

Go to UD FB page and ask current students.

Academics are at the same tough level at both schools. Many SUNY schools have a reputation (I do not know specifics for Binghamton) as being “suitcase” schools with many students going home on weekends. UD is the exact opposite of this. Most students stay on campus on weekends. There are so many things you can do if you have the interest to become involved that you should never get bored. Most parents tend to find that once their child starts at UD that they have a hard time getting them to agree to come home for weekend visits at all. UD is a very social school no matter what your interests are. Hope this helps. Good luck in making your decision. You should check out UD’s activities site which can provide you with extensive information about all the things available at UD.

Where would I find the UD Activity Site you refer to above?

RGKovacs519:

If you go to UD’s main website place your curser on STUDENTS at the top. Then move curser down to Student Life. A list will open on the right. Then click on Student Life. This site contains info on most all activities available to students at UD. It will take you some time to go through it all. Hope this helps.

Also I would like to congratulate you and your D regarding her Nursing acceptance and merit scholarship to UD. Now comes the hard part of making a final decision on where to attend. If your D is still considering UD for Nursing I would recommend, if possible, that she attend one of UD’s Decision Days held on two Saturdays in April. IMHO UD does a good job in these presentations and the Nursing component is done very well. Perhaps your D will find she “fits in” well with UD. Best of luck to your D wherever she decides to attend. I am sure she will do just fine. If you or your D has any questions about the Nursing Program at UD please feel free to ask and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability.

FYI…Binghamton is NOT a suitcase school; never has been…just saying…

That being said, a visit to both schools should clarify your decision…

Agree Binghamton isn’t a suitcase school. My impression of New York kids with this same choice is that they go to Binghamton over Delaware if no $ offered by either, they go to Delaware if they get enough aid that price doesn’t matter, because Delaware is in a better location and perceived as more fun. Bing is more competitive for NY kids though

Binghamton is not a suitcase school, and never has been. Everybody I know who goes to Binghamton loves it, but the same is true for Delaware. Are you a NYS resident? The cost of attendance for NYS residents attending Binghamton is just under $20,000. What would you pay for Delaware? Lastly, Binghamton is VERY hard to get into. Many students from our high school who recently got accepted to Delaware would not get into Binghamton. They are both great schools and you can’t go wrong with either choice.

decision opinion…I have been in love with University of Delaware since 8th grade. It was the only college for me. I worked my butt off four years of high school to apply with, as of today, a 3.92 gpa. I had leadership, volunteer, activities, varsity sports as well as 6 APs and all honors classes. The one single thing was my SAT scores were lower 1660 was what I applied with. There was nothing I could do about it. I studied took it twice and took coursed. It did not budge. I was ADMITTED to University of Delaware but not to the nursing program. I was devistated. I know it has to be soley because of my SAT scores because I read on here that others got into the nursing program with 3.4/3.5 gpas but higher SATS. I am such a hard worker. I busted my butt for my 3.93 and gave up so much social time and feel so cheated just becase of a stupid test score. I would be the hardest nurse student they ever saw. My question is that my parents are ready to put the deposit down but should I reconsider? I was accepted into neuroscience program but really gave no thought to a second major and really do not want to study outside the health field. I was accepted to other colleges and really have no interest as I love Delaware but not another major. I have told my parents to hold off on the deposit. Do I go to Delaware because I love it and can so see myself as a Blue Hen or follow my dream of medical major. I am so upset. Thanks for you opinions. P.S. transfer is next to impossible into the program so that is not an option. Thanks again.

A visit to Delaware and Binghamton would be a very good idea. Both are excellent schools, but my daughter is one of those people whose environment has a huge impact on her moods and energy levels. She just could never see herself at Binghamton because it was so ugly and the weather was so miserable. She loves the fact that UD is pretty and open and green. Which, of course, may not matter the slightest bit to you, but everyone has their own issues.

Princess : Where else did you apply?

Princessfab, you need to sit down with yourself privately and really ask yourself some tough questions. No one needs to know the answers but you.

Nursing is HARD, really hard, and very competitive. You said that your SAT scores were low. How low were they and do they reflect your academic attainment in an accurate way? How were your science grades in high school? Not every major is right for every student, even if it’s what they think they will love and being hardworking can’t overcome all deficits. There is no shame in that and it doesn’t reflect negatively on you at all.

If you assess the situation dispassionately and ultimately truly feel that you can handle the nursing curriculum and nursing is what you truly want to do, then you should find another college. If in your deepest heart you think nursing might be a stretch for you and you are completely open to seeing what else is out there in the world, then Delaware could be just the place. Good luck in whatever decision you make.

@zoosermom I took AP science courses and got B+! I have been working toward this my entire high school time. I am the most humble person you will ever meet however looking over my transcript and resume I can not see how I did not make it in compared with what some accepted to nursing posted. I have alwasy wanted to be a nurse/doctor…I was always an uphill battle with standarized tests but once given the chance at honors, AP etc classes I have always succeeded and never made my teachers regret it. Delaware is the place I belong…so bummed.

princessfab, my daughter’s roommate who is a junior is planning on going to a 2 year nursing program after she graduates because she didn’t get accepted to the nursing program either. delaware helped her plan her 4 years, taking all the proper courses she would need in undergrad to make this possible. if the medical field is what you want, and there aren’t other schools where you did get accepted in nursing, i’d check with an advisor to see if something like this would be possible for you.

Thanks Mwallenmd! Your help is greatly appreciated. We are attending the UD Decidsion Day on April 13th and this is definitely in her top few choices! I will keep you posted and if she has any questions I will be sure to send her your way.

I’m a freshman at Udel so I can answer questions but you should give more background on yourself: what’s your major, what are you looking for in terms of social life, do you want to go to grad school, where do you want to work after college, are finances an issue, and are you a resident of Delaware or New York? My personal advice would probably be to go wherever is cheaper. However if finances are not an issue and if you are an engineering major, and/or want lots of Greek life maybe Udel would be the better choice. On the other hand, I think that generally speaking Binghamton has a better academic reputation since it is the flagship New York school and has a stronger student body. So to sum up what I’ve said, if you think you want to work in New York after college or want to go to grad school then Bing is marginally the better choice.

@iluvskool

Thank you so much for your input! i do want to go to grad school, I am a resident of New York, but with the financial aid that UD has provided me, the price would be about the same. I understand that Binghamton may have a better academic reputation, but i would really live to partake in greek life and the campus and surrounding area of UD is preferable to Bing.

princessfab:

So sorry about your not being accepted to Nursing. In response to the question in your first post I don’t see any reason/advantage to sending in your deposit right away (you would just need to send it in prior to May 1). It might be best right now to give yourself a little time to get over and adapt to your understandable shock/disappointment about not getting into Nursing at UD. Then, in a few weeks, you can evaluate your college options in a more objective manner. You actually do have a number of options you can consider. To summarize your primary options (as noted in previous posts on this thread).

If you want to get your BSN in 4 years you can choose to attend a college where you were accepted into the Nursing Program. I understand from another post you made on another thread that you were accepted to other colleges with decent merit money. If these were Nursing Program acceptances you should seriously consider attending another school. I know a number of students who felt the same way as you but decided to give it a try at another college, and most of them ended up at least liking, if not loving, the other college. Most all of them later felt happy about making this decision.

If you ultimately decide you still want to attend UD you could complete the Neuroscience major (this major is also in the medical field to a degree-a number of pre-med students elect this major as undergrads) and obtain your Bachelors Degree in it. Then you could attend an Accelerated BSN Program F.T. for 18 months to obtain your BSN. Actually UD offers this type of Program as well and the recommended undergrad course requirements are noted in the Nursing website. This of course will take more time and money to get your BSN degree so you really need to keep this in mind (Is attending undergrad at UD in another major worth these things?).

There are other options as well but it would take too long to list them all. I know you are hurting right now and feel cheated by UD but IMHO you need to take some time right now to get over, as best you can, these feelings. But ultimately you need to focus on what is the most prudent course of action for you to take to achieve your career goals. UD is an excellent college, but there are many excellent colleges out there. I wish you a speedy recovery. Your talents and motivation will serve you well at whatever college or course of action you decide to take.

My daughter also had top grades and didn’t get into the nursing major. Apparently, they save a large number of the seats for Delaware residents (understandably since there aren’t many other nursing schools in the state).

In addition to Mwallenmd’s options, you can also attend Delaware for 2 years taking nursing pre-requisite courses, and then transfer to a program such as Jefferson University in Center City Philadelphia for the last 2 years with a nursing degree. Their program is designed for transfers from other colleges.
