Hi guys,

I'm a high school senior and I'm having a difficult time trying to narrow down a major. English and History have always been my favorite subjects in school. Love politics. I've thought about majoring in journalism since...elementary school, but I don't know if it's really...necessary? What do you guys think?

I've also been thinking about doing Public Relations, but a public relations major also seems unnecessary.

Any alternate choices I could major in that would still lead me into these fields?

Thanks! :)

I'd personally recommend history. By majoring in this, you get to learn history AND politics, and it's also a good concentration if you're looking for journalism. I know nothing about social science, but studying history probably won't hurt you since it seems like the "fundamental" of many other fields of social science (And since you're a high school senior, you have a plenty of time to narrow your list down. So no need to rush now!)

Thanks! I'll be sure to keep that in mind. :)

I'd like to think I have a lot of time, too, but my indecisiveness and the fact that college applications are right around the corner kind of freaks me out.

Radiotowers,

Don't stress too much about choosing a major--you can easily change in college, millions of students do that anyway. Other good questions to ask yourself are: do you like to write? do you want to work with people? what jobs do you want after graduation?

Yeah, I know I can always change. The thing is, my parents are just really concerned because I really want to go out-of-state and they don't want me going around "aimlessly" because I am so undecided. They'd rather have me go to community college and figure it out than spend all that money.

I love writing and working with other people. The problem is I don't know what I want as a job. I've thought about becoming a journalist, working in public relations, becoming a teacher...since I am so unsure, I'm just trying to find a major that's broad enough that it will prepare me for a wide variety of careers.

Well, an English major is the most popular and would definitely suit you for a career in either journalism, PR or teaching (English teacher).

I'd always recommend something that is broad and fundamental in these cases, so I'd say English would be a good bet.

Try looking at a Communications major as well.
