<p>The area of the figure above is . What is the perimeter of the figure?</p>

<p>Divide the figure into two rectangles -- the first 1 high by 2 wide, the second x high by 1 wide (where x is the distance that the bottom of the figure jogs down). The area of the first rectangle is 2, so the area of the second must be 1/4. x, then is a 1/4 and the perimeter follows.</p>
