Help with an SAT Math Problem

I don't know how to solve this problem. Could anyone help me out with it and explain how to solve it?

Thank you very much.

sorry, but an additional problem that I don’t know how to solve is:

http://i83.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/albums/j283/ta_lia/sat-1.jpg

for the first one i think it should be (b) because its the absolute value graph, and |-x| always = |x|

I think the second one is “(a) a/6” since x≥(a/6)-0.5 the answer can only be=(a/6)-0.5 or >(a/6)-0.5 … (a) is the only choice > than the expression while other answer choices are <(a/6)-0.5

^ thats what i thought too
did you try plugging in numbers?

Na, i noticed that in spite of whatever the value of a/6 is the value of the expression is only going to get smaller if you subtract a positive constant from it. I’m not sure about my answer though.

actually yeah you’re right because if x = a/6
then 6x + 3 >> 6(a/6) + 3 >> a + 3 is always greater than a
=)

Wouldn’t the answer to the first one be A because f(0) = 0 (according to the graph, unless it is drawn incorrectly) then f(0) + f(a) = f(a).

Selena, the graph drawn doesn’t appear to be a absolute value graph, so that rules out choice B.

1.) is (A) as mentioned

2.) x>=(a-3)/6
x>=a/6-1/2
that’s also (A), since all the other choices are less than a/6-1/2.

ohh i see what you’re saying
yeah it was hard to tell =)
