Help with Applying

Hi this is my first time on this board and I am glad that i found it!
I am looking for schools that offer merit scholarships because my parents can’t really afford those huge tuition fees.

I am an upcoming senior in a medical academy(magnet school) Highschool in Houston, Texas. I am open to any decent academic University as long as it is affordable.
My stats:

3.5gpa(Freshman year), 3.45gpa (Sophomore year), and 3.9gpa( Junior year)
I am just outside the top 10% at my highschool (in top 11-12%)
Im still waiting for my results from my SAT i took in June but hope to get at least a 1700
NHS Member
I took 5 AP Classes all three years and plan to take 5 more AP classes Senior year ( we had a block schedule so we were able to take 8 classes, but there will only be seven classes Senior year like all the other normal schools)
I am a Varsity soccer player and Varsity sprinter and was on Varsity Cross Country my Sophomore year
I am also looking to run track or play soccer at a University. (My times in Track and Field: 100m 10.7; 200m 22.3;
400m 50.02; High jump 6’0)

Thank you guys in advance!!!

edit: Also i am Half Black and Half Asian if that accounts for anything

Go to the Financial Aid forum and look at the stickied threads at the top for merit aid options.

Your times would appear to make you very recruitable - have you contacted any coaches? I would speak to your high school track coach immediately about options (assuming he/she is available).

@obsidian257 In the northeast, Your 200 and 400 times are recruitable in NESCAC, Patriot and Centennial League.

You should fill out recruiting questionnaires. The schools in those conferences are good with financial aid.

A 1700 however is very weak for NESCAC and Patriot but ok for Centennial.

A ~1700 isn’t enough for merit scholarships really unless you choose smaller schools that aren’t as well known. But if you choose Division I or Division II, it is possible you could get an athletic scholarship to help offset costs. Get involved with talking to coaches NOW.

How much can your parents afford generally? Give a glance at the SuperMatch tool on the left bar.

Thanks for replying. My parents are willing to pay around 5,000. I might also have to take a gap year and get a job to help pay for college. I will get my SAT Score tomorrow so i will follow up when i get it. Also i am planning on contacting coaches this summer. I read that Howard University gives good merit scholarships. Do i have to sign up for NCAA clearing house in order for coaches to write back?

Track scholarships generally are small and for times much lower than a 50 second 400 meter.

This kid’s best chance is D3 or Patriot D1 where need money is available and the coach can help with admissions. Many meet 100% need.

You should register with NCAA and get a clearing house number. It is not required though in D3.

Use your times to get in the best school you can.

For Division III, you don’t have to do the Clearinghouse but for D1 and D2, it is helpful to do it now. Howard does give good scholarships (this site is the most linked-to resource: http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/) but again, you need to get those stats up. Take the ACT at least once to see if you can do better/like it better than the SAT.
