Help with audition songs!

Hello! I'm Abby, and I'm currently a senior. I've done various community and regional musicals for years and I'm beginning to prepare audition material for college MT programs. I'm auditioning for Wagner College, Westminster College of the Arts (Rider University), Marymount Manhattan, Montclair State University, and Long Island University (as of now). As with most seniors getting ready to begin the audition process, I'm very stressed about my song choices! I was wondering if anybody would be able to offer suggestions that are not overdone, yet still recognizable songs, preferably a ballad and an uptempo. I consider myself a sort of "high mezzo", but I usually just tell people soprano.

Here are 2 of the most recent recordings of myself singing:

"The Trolley Song" - Meet Me In St. Louis (cover) - YouTube

"Green Finch and Linnet Bird" - Sweeney Todd (cover) - YouTube

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or help! Also please keep in mind these two recordings were from months ago, so I have definitely improved since then :) Thank you so much for your time!

Abby, you have a pretty voice, and I would definitely put you in the soprano category. Actually, I think Trolley Song could be a good choice for an audition song. You probably want to stay away from Green Finch, though – it’s not only overdone, but it’s Sondheim, which you generally want to avoid at auditions.

Try searching through some early 20th century MT composers for good soprano ballads: Gershwin, Kern, Berlin, Coward, Weill, Porter. You’ll find a wealth of material that is good and not commonly chosen for college auditions.

Thank you!!

I’d also strongly suggest that you have more than 2 songs prepared – just in case they ask you for something else; or in the event that you hear someone else singing one of your chosen songs.

I will definitely do that. Thank you so much for your help!
