Ok so I'm kind of struggling with what to do here. I have major back problems and I'm not really supposed to carry around heavy loads; however, my backpack is sooo heavy. My laptop alone is enormously heavy even though it is of an average size 13 inches and so I decided that maybe I could do without it and leave it at home. I can't really get rid of any books to lighten the load. I commute to school, so there's no way for me to drop stuff off at my dorm. The only option I can think of would be to leave books in my car and switch them out periodically throughout the day.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would leave a book or two at home, but I have a couple two hour gaps in between classes and I work part time, so I have to get as much of my homework/assignments done as I can in between classes.

You can get a locker at PCL after the first week. If you want to take books to campus but not carry them around, you can drop them off there and switch them out as needed. I do this since I study there as well.

Scratch the above. That only applies to my school. I forgot which forum I was in.

See if your school might have lockers somewhere on campus as well. Wish you the best.

My son had a health issue and carrying the backpack was a problem too. He refused to get the rolling one, so he solved the problem by keeping his things in his car and going back for them after classes.

I would definitely ditch the laptop and if you can get back to your car between classes then you should leave books in there. When I went to community college I always left my stuff in my car and only took what I needed for each class.

I will personally carry your books and walk around with you for $2150 per semester. If you do a down payment for 2 semesters, I will take $100 off the total price.

Stop panicking! First of all, you don’t bring your textbooks to class, you’ll likely study at home or in the library. If you’re a Science major, you’ll constantly be writing out equations and stuff in lecture and lab, so bring a paper notebook and a pen, don’t carry your laptop to class. All you need to carry to a class is a paper notebook, pen, pencil, calculator (sometimes), cell phone, and other basic light-weight necessities.

Just leave your textbooks at home, or leave them in the car, or see if there are lockers available for commuters at your school. I’m saying this because the alternative is a rolling backpack, which will earn you glares, snide comments and the occasional kick.

Yes, you’re not going to bring textbooks to class unless it’s a very special occasion. All I brought to class were a notebook, some writing implements, a calculator, and snacks.

But there is so much hassle walking back and forth to your car for your books after every class. And guys they said they needed their books because they have to do homework during breaks because they have to work after school.

And I didn’t mean a backpack like that link.

My mom has this laptop/writing rolling thing that is REALLY nice.

I don’t know why everyone is making such a big deal out of rolling backpacks. Just about everyone at my school uses one or they use rolling small suitcases. Its really not that big a deal.

I have a whole stack of different backpacks because I get tired of using the same one over and over again. I have a plan black one, one with cartoon characters on it, 2 different messenger bags, several totes. I have used all within the last 6 mths. I also tried the leave them in the car till next class, that got tiresome quickly and I wrecked a brand new math book doing that (the binding melted and large sections of the book fell out) after leaving in the car one day.

I’m sorry if this is going to come of as rude but I don’t know your gender (I checked the profile but it doesn’t say anything as far as I could see), but I also have back problems and I found one of those HUGE tote bags to be easy on my back. I could carry some thick textbooks (one that’s even good up to your third year of University) and my laptop without it killing me. That’s changing classes every 75 minutes as I’m still in high school. It all depends on how you stack it and how organized they are. If you stack them so that they are standing up it’s MUCH easier on the back and you think it weighs less. Same goes with regular backpacks and messenger bags.

I also went to a community college and went back to my car to get books. After awhile I stopped doing this, only because I realized it saved a little time and I could do with carrying an extra book or two. Usually it worked out fine- it would depend on how big your campus is and how close apart your classes are.

And I agree, except for a few classes I hardly ever actually needed my textbooks. You could probably get away with notebook, folder, pen, etc. and whenever you do need those one or two books for class you’ll be okay. Oh, and college textbooks aren’t super heavy like in high school. A lot of mine were paperback and not big/heavy at all.
