Help with bama bound housing questions

Is it advisable, if OOS, to get previous and after day housing for students and parents?

Also, not sure how to choose housing for parents.

If mom and dad go, do you select one single bedroom, or do you select two single bedrooms?

Are these the dorm rooms?

If so, do the parents bring their own linen?

Would it be better, if both parents coming, to just stay in a local hotel?

What time do activities start and end each day?

If still up in air about if one or both parents coming and where will stay, should we just go ahead and register son for chosen session, and worry about mom and dad later?

Still, if son only one staying on campus, and is OOS, should he check in night before?

Thanks for any guidance, guys.

Parents should stay in a hotel - especially if two parents are coming. The dorms are single beds, one to a room. Super Suites housing is used for Bama Bound.

I would come a day early because Bama Bound starts early. But I would not stay an extra night after BB ends.

I would have son check in the night before to the dorm, and parents check into their hotel. Many kids are done with Bama Bound registration (the last thing of the day) around 1-2pm on the second day.

My dad and I didn’t have to use a hotel room and it worked out just fine, but we live only 3 1/2 hours away. If you have to fly or drive a long time, then a hotel might help. Students have to stay in Lakeside West and parents can stay in Lakeside East.

I’d recommend day before housing, but as Day 2 ends around noon, I don’t see a need for day after housing. I flew home at 5:30 PM the day my session ended and still had plenty of time. Extra day and parent housing should be on the registration form. You can register for Parent Orientation at a later date life you prefer.

Housing this year will be in Ridgecrest South rather than Lakeside East/West as it was previously. All people need to bring linens or rent them from UA. Everyone gets their own room. Parents can either share a suite with 3 same-gender suite mates, have a 2 bedroom suite for couples, or rent an entire 4 bedroom suite. The student will room with other students. AFAIK, siblings have to room with the parents. I believe parents/siblings are housed in one half of Ridgecrest South while the students are in another.

The first day has activities from 7:30AM-Midnight and the second day is 7:30-Noon. Schedules are posted at [Tentative Schedules for Bama Bound 2010 - Bama Bound Orientation - The University of Alabama](http://orientation.ua.edu/details/schedules.html) .
I stayed on campus the one night and my parents stayed off campus both nights. Since I had met some people on facebook before my session, I ended up spending a few hours on campus meeting them and other people the night before anyway.

What time is check in if you arrive the day before?

Can you add the parents later?

Will have to talk about this housing situation.

Do you think that Capstone would be available for parents?

How is parking going to be at this time?

Also, since fees are nonrefundable, if you have to change your date, do you get to transfer the charges, or will you be charged twice if you change to another date? There’s probably a change fee, right? Just wondering if we should hold off to register, but don’t want to wait too long. But things do tend to pop up around here, although if we register for a late enough session, can hopefully factor school obligations out of the equation.

You can add parents later.

When two parents are coming, it doesn’t work well to stay in a dorm because then you’re in 2 different rooms (and paying for 2 separate rooms), because each room has only one twin bed.

If just one parent is coming and doesn’t mind not having a private bathroom, then staying in a dorm would be fine. Many parents prefer hotels to have a private bathroom or so that two parents can sleep together.

Parking permits are given. Plenty of parking available since only a fraction of freshmen are at each Bama Bound.

I have no idea how fees are handled if you change dates. I don’t think that you’re charged twice.

I wouldn’t wait too long to register for BB if you want an honors session.

You’ll have to call Capstone Hotel and find out if there is space available. I imagine that it books up first.

Ok, just got off the phone with UA Orientation after jacking up the online registration from just looking :)

Couple of things -
using the May 27-28 session as an example (the one I was playing with)
can check into the dorms 5/26 or 5/27, and can check out 5/28 or 5/29
If staying two nights the total cost for student is $144, $120 for session and $24 for the extra night.

There is no availability of dorm housing the night before (or at all) for the Early Honors session on May 14.

There is no fee to change sessions, it is based on availability, open sessions will be on the drop down menu.

Adding parents later is not an issue with the small exception of possibly not being able to get dorm housing.

NOTE - if you play around with the options in the online Orientation Registration and don’t exit out right you will be locked out for the future (learned this the hard way)!

going to check Capstone for availability now (just in case)
As far as parking, we were worried about parking for UA Days, which was highly attended, and had NO issues at all getting into the parking deck.
BTW - Southwest fares have just gone up to BHM for whatever reason, but then if they go back down can always rebook and get the refund credited to your account.

As we get closer to committing to a Bama Bound Session I’d love to coordinate with anyone attending the same session :)

Right now Capstone is avail. for Honors sessions 5/26 - 5/28 ($135/night); 5/31 - 6/2.

If I or hubby went alone I think the dorm thing would be kind of fun - esp. if there were other parents there.

Of course since we’d be driving in from the airport, would first try and see if we could get that awesome Wingate rate again… can always sit at the Capstone Bar for free :)

When DS attended BB in summer of 2008, he flew down alone and took a shuttle “Alabama Door to Door”. I don’t recal the charge put we paid for a round trip fare. When scheduling, they asked for his arrival and departure times/airline/flight #'s. DS had no problems.
He did pay the extra linen charge (I recall $17.00) which made packing very light.
DS even had time after scheduling to meet with Dr. Sharpe.
Knowing that the students schedule was jam packed, DS and I did not see the need to have a parent attend. Of course this was our second child to attend college far from home. If I had any reservations about DS far away from home, I may have attended BB with him.
I had to let go sooner or later… We both managed to make the transition just fine. ; )

There was no place on the BB registration form to rent linens. How do we go about doing that? How much advance notice do we have to give? Would definitely want to take advantage of that to lighten the load when packing.

just to be sure, parents don’t have to go to bama bound, right?
My parents have no desire to go, so I just wanted to make sure they didn’t have to

No, parents do not have to go.

I didn’t go to my second son’s Bama Bound.

It’s up to the family.

ok good…cuz I don’t know if I could get them to go if they had to

There was no place on the BB registration form to rent linens.

I would call and ask. Ask if the linens include a pillow, too.

We didn’t rent linens. Our boys brought sleeping bags and a pillow.

This is what it says on the Bama Bound website…

What should I bring to Bama Bound?

We recommend you dress casually and comfortably. In the winter, bring a jacket and dress in layers to accommodate for fluctuations in the weather and central heating.

Other items you should bring include:

* Bama Bound confirmation mailer with temporary parking pass

 • Comfortable walking shoes
 • Financial aid documents (parents’ tax returns, etc.)
 • Pen and paper
 • Campus Wide Identification Number (CWID)
 • Photo identification (driver’s license, military ID, etc.)
 • Proof of immunization if not already provided to the University
 • Umbrella or raincoat
 • Any special admission documents

In addition, students staying overnight for summer programs should bring the following items:

* An overnight bag and toiletries

 • Twin bed linens and towels
 • An alarm clock
 • Gym clothes/tennis shoes, swim suit/flip-flops for Student Recreation Center visit (freshmen sessions only)

Linens are available for student rental through the Office of Housing and Residential Communities during Bama Bound. The cost is $10.00 per linen set and they are available onsite at residence hall check-in.

I’m guessing that it includes a pillow, but ask to be sure.

Students will learn basic canoeing and camping skills, plus the ins and outs of college life from upper class students.

The trip begins with facilitated icebreakers & other group initiatives. To be followed by canoe safety and instruction. Participants will navigate on Lake Tuscaloosa to Treasure Island. Camp will be set up and dinner will be prepared as a group before dozing off to nature’s music. The following day, participants will break down camp and paddle back to the launch site and return to the Outdoor Recreation Department located within the University Recreation Center.
