Help With Choosing A Play

I already posted this in International Students, but it makes more sense posting it here...

Does anyone out there have any good suggestions for a play that I can direct in my senior year?

It needs to be something with a 'name' so it will attract people to the auditions. I'm having a hard time with this, because my play (if I find one!) would be on at the same time as the school musical, so the number of people who would normally be interested in acting is already reduced because so many of them will be in the musical and my school doesn't have a good track record when it comes to getting people to audition for student run productions. I'm thinking maybe something like 'The Crucible'?

Help me!

Well, anything Shakespeare is good I think, perhaps King Lear. That's a great one that's not really done too often. Or, how about Oedipus Rex, or Antigone, I don't think many schools usually do Greek drama. Or, for something more modern, mabey T. S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral.

Murder in the Cathedral?
It would be nice to hear peasants speaking about philosophical things with british accents. The last part is the real core though.
Oh yeah do "streetcar named desire" although it might be banned due to the language and violence. However it sure will attract attention.

Mbow, I don't think a Shakespearean play would be a good choice for a high school, as far less people would be likely to attend that, particularly with there being a musical at the same time. I really think "The Crucible" would be a good play to do...More people would be able to appreciate it, and it's in more modern English (somewhat), so the majority would be able to understand it...It's a great play, and I really enjoyed when we read it earlier this year in Honors English II...

If you want a short One-Act try How To Make a teenage American Quilt. It is a bunch of profiles of different kids with all sorts of issues related to being a teen in today's America.

Cyrano de Bergerac! Awesome play, and the Anthony Burgess translation at least doesn't take any effort to comprehend.

What musical are you doing? My school also does both musicals and plays, this year we did Les Miserables and next year we're going to do Cats. If you have high-profile musicals going on at the same time as the play there's no way you will compete with that. Can you schedule your play to be far before/after the musical?

Thanks a lot, all that was really helpful!

David 06: The musical is Carmen which this year will be a very high-profile musical because it's the last year for a lot of people who are incredible singers and dancers. Unfortunately, due to exam schedules, it's the only time I can do my play! It will be a week before though, so I shouldn't have (too much) of a problem with audiences but it's attracting people to the auditions in the first place that I'm worried about.

I like the idea of Cyrano de Bergerac and Streetcar. I think I have a block about doing Streetcar though, because the film just nailed it so perfectly. However, there shouldn't be too much of a problem about doing a play with violence or swearing, since the last musical was Cabaret!

Any other ideas???

Personally, I was bored during the too-long Crucible performance at my school.
