Help with choosing major

Hello All, I am new to CC and someone suggested me this site is the best help for college admissions. My child wants to do law and she is not sure yet of her undergrad major. Any suggestions. Basically, I suggested her to go for Economics or Finance as I thought she will have more options after her undergrad. I don’t want to direct her on the wrong path.

I’m not really familiar with law, but I think there are pre-law programs that prepare you as an undergrad to apply for law school

I thought it did not matter what one majors in.

Thank you both for your response . Yes I agree it does not matter but My concern is that if she for some reason is not able to get into a law college, or is she looses her interest in law then ,with theses majors she might have more options open.

What is your daughter’s opinion in this? That is probably the most important factor in this decision. Also, her academic strengths play a lot into the decision, too. You mentioned possible majors as Economics or Finance. Is one of her strengths math? Even if it is, she might not be personally interested in it.
By doing a quick google search, I found a broad list of typical bachelor degrees for people looking into law school, and reasons they are recommended. This list includes Economics, but also Political Science, and Business, along with more broad subjects such as History, English, and Philosophy. Your daughter should choose what is right for her based on her academic as well as personal interests.

Thank you Marg. I agree with you and I kind feel that I am trying to push her towards Economics. She is more of an English person than Math. It is more likely that she will do better in political science or English major. She took psychology in 11th grade and loved the subject and wanted to major in that, but when I did some research on future with psychology major, it was not very convincing. Thank you so much for help.

@sunmun Let her follow her passions, I know you want her best but pushing her into something she does not want to do will not make her happy (even if she makes a decent salary). If she wants to major in psychology, let her.

If you’d like her to have more options open while still letting her follow her passions, you could let her major in Psychology while asking if she’d be open to minoring in Economics. Also, it’s normal to change interests in college - most students end up changing their major during their undergrad years anyway! I’m sure if she’s driven she’ll be able to achieve anything she wants to ^-^
