i really dont want to take another language... but i've only had 2 years and it's 2 years required and 3 recommended.
but i also jumped from mandarin 1 sophmore year to mandarin 3 junior year. does that count as 3 or 2?? will it look bad for colleges like UCs or Ivy leagues?

It will count as 2 languages most likely. And no, it won’t look bad. Taking up a language class is always good for your record when you apply for top-notch colleges. It shows you like to go above and beyond the norms and you are willing to go beyond your own native language. Mandarin is a good class to take (though I never took it). I took Spanish for 2 years. If you want 3 language classes, it should be Mandarin 1, Mandarin 2, Mandarin 3. If you went from 1 to 3, then take another Mandarin class or just take up another language class like Spanish 1 or something.

For a UC, it is highly recommended you take three. Highly. I wouldn’t suggest ignoring that unless you are failing or something. If you can get a B in Mandarin, take it. Mandarin 1 and 3 will each count as 1 class, totaling two. Recommendations are there for a reason you shouldn’t ignore them unless you have a specific problem other than that you don’t feel like doing the class.

Also, don’t take Spanish 1 or something. They want three years of the same language. It would probably be better for you to take another class besides Spanish 1, as that would do absolutely nothing for you.

In my county, we have to take 3 years of a language.
