That made my day:-) Knowing I helped one person means that our mistakes served some purpose.
@lindagaf I don’t have any idea what you mean by mistakes. your D attends one of the best schools in the world, we would have been thrilled if our D ended up there.
It was the coining of the term “average excellent” that helped me understand that while I thought my D’s stats would play at tippy top schools, they were really just average excellent and she needed to create a (true) story, told in her common app, that might resonate with colleges.
You are too kind @quietdesperation But we did make mistakes, even if the end result has been great. Probably more mistakes will be made with my son. He is more an “average” pretty good student, haha! Glad your daughter gets to have a nice relaxing Christmas break.
and so it goes:
val of D’s class was admitted to harvard, rejected from cornell. Our school doesn’t weight, val has fluff in her gpa, D has none, on a weighted basis they are pretty close and D has better standardized test scores. Now D is wondering about /regretting ED.
the only two schools she liked more than cornell was stanford and harvard, the decision to ED was made with the notion that she didn’t really have a chance at those schools.
sigh.
Tell her don’t live life looking in the rear view mirror talking about woulda, coulda shoulda.
If your kid goes through the Cornell thread, she will see lots of people who would love to be in her spot. She can be happy for her friend, but she should also celebrate herself.
my goodness, just paid our first-semester bill, not sure in what universe $50k/year (in-state at cals) is a bargain, but compared to the tuition bills for our other kids at oberlin and UM (oos), it sure seems like a steal.
Was just reading through this thread again as I’m helping a friend’s daughter make her list. What I found most interesting was that Cornell didn’t even appear on your D’s list until post #128 - and not as ED until #160. For anyone reading the thread, it goes to show how much a list can change over the course of a year+. That was one thing I discovered first-hand when my S + D were applying in 2014. Congrats again to your daughter!
thanks @4Gulls. For us, the lesson learned was not to limit our kid’s choices based upon our view of a school. We’d heard Cornell was cutthroat competitive, stressful and lacked academic support. My D read all that stuff and said “bring it on!”.
