<p>I've posted this once before, but the list of schools and some stats have changed so I'd like some new advice.
My S is a Junior in a suburban NJ public school (#23 of 386 in NJ).
His GPA is 3.5 unweighted (should go up to between 3.6 & 3.7 after this year - he'll have all A's and A-). He's taking 3 Honors classes and AP English now.
He will also be taking a mix of all H and AP classes his senior year.
He blew the 1st semester of his freshman year, and has been climbing up ever since.
He's taken the SAT's twice-
1290/1920 - 650M, 640CR, 630W in March
1310/1940 - 680M, 630CR, 630W in May (after much studying).
He plans to take it once more - but I don't see it going up much.
He's taking SAT II - Math II, Physics & World History in June.
His high school does not do ranking.
His EC's aren't that great -
Community Service @ 60 hours
Chess Club 10, 11 and will be club president 12th grade.
Works summers and weekends selling at a fleamarket.
Will have a summer internship this year as an assistant to the VP of Sales at an apparel company(pretty famous national brand).
Taking a Summer Course at William Patterson College in NJ (Investing in a Simulated Trading Room).
He wants to major in Finance and has identified his reach schools and target schools -
NYU Stern - reach
Carnegie Melon - reach
UVA - reach
UMD - reach?
Penn State - target?
GWU - target?
TCNJ - target?
Rutgers - safety?
Temple - safety
CUNY Baruch College - safety
We are not going to need financial/merit aid.
Do you think he has a shot getting in to any of his reach schools?
Are there any real target school on the list, enough safeties?
Thanks in advance for your help.</p>
<p>Finance major…does that mean he’ll be applying to Stern at NYU? If so, that will be a reach. </p>
<p>That said…altho NYU is supposedly need blind, I wonder if that’s always the case with someone who can full pay.</p>
<p>Don’t know if CMU and GWU are need aware…if they are, that will be good for you.</p>
<p>Safeties are probably safeties.</p>
<p>PSU will probably accept.</p>
<p>*His GPA is 3.5 unweighted (should go up to between 3.6 & 3.7 after this year *</p>
<p>At the end of junior year??</p>
<p>yes, at the end of Junior year.
bump - anyone else?</p>
<p>How about Lehigh as a reach?
How about Indiana University - he may not get in directly to the business school but he could try - and if he doesn’t he could do very well in college and then apply</p>
<p>How about private, small colleges like Rollins and Bentley?</p>
<p>Not familiar with the criteria for many of the schools on the list. From what I do know it seems that UVA is a bit of a reach. NYU Stern seems like a reach as well - just NYU would be less of a reach.</p>
<p>Is he set on large schools? Has he considered coming up to the Boston area? Maybe take a look at Bentley, Babson, and Northeastern(great co-op programs and right in the city).</p>
<p>If your son is interested in going north of NJ you might take a look at Bryant in Rhode Island as a target / safe school.</p>
<p>[University</a> of Connecticut School of Business](<a href=“http://www.business.uconn.edu/cms]University”>UConn School of Business | School of Business) </p>
<p>A good safety would be UCONN, you could do a day trip from New Jersey.</p>
<p>James Madison would be a good choice for business/finance. Maybe Boston U or Northeastern? Is he only interested in the bigger universities? Think he has a good shot at PSU and that would be a perfect fit for him. Agree with all your “reach” assessments, etc. My son was very similar in terms of having a slow climb since freshman year. He may suprise you and bring it up past a 3.75 by application time :).</p>
<p>I agree with the recommendation of Indiana U…also both UArizona and Arizona State.</p>
<p>My uninformed view would be that UMD would be a match. +1 for Lehigh and IU.</p>
