Hey,

So I have a few questions. First, here are my basic stats:

GPA- around 3.8 with drastic increase from freshman year
SAT- 740v, 680m, 740w
EC- decent assortment, best of which is my job at ESPN or writing

I was wondering if you could give any suggestions for good colleges that would fit as reaches, matches, and safeties. I'm interested in studying communications or a strong liberal arts education.

Also, I can't decide between big university or small LAC. Any advice?
Thanks guys.

A bit more information would help - let's set aside the size question for now, but could you tell us if you have a preference for a particular part of the country, a specific setting (i.e., in the country, in suburbia, in a small city, or in a large city), do you have any problems with a strong Greek system, how about a particular religious affiliation,or do you have any other preferences?

That said, I would say Northwestern might be a good fit for your interests --- their communications school is excellent, it's what I would call a mid-sized university, and, if you decided communications was not for you, has an excellent liberal arts focus. Other possibilities would include:

Larger universities:
The University of Southern California
Boston U
Syracuse
U of Wisconsin
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
Ohio U
U of Miami
NYU
U of Michigan
Indiana U

Medium sized universities:
University of Missouri-Columbia
DePauw University
American U
Stanford
Villanova
Southern Methodist U
Fairfield U
Fordham
Ithaca College

Smaller schools with journalism/communication programs:
Washington and Lee (VA)
Trinity U (Texas)
Muhlenberg (PA)
Gettysburg (PA)
Southwestern U (Texas)
Earlham (Indiana)
Flagler (Florida)
Emerson (MA)
Wheaton (MA)

You might also want to take a look at these schools which have excellent English programs: Vassar, Kenyon, U of Pennsylvania, Skidmore, Pomona, Duke Bowdoin, Boston College, Bard, Brown.

Good luck!

Yea, size is a big question. In terms of the other info., I visisted Duke, Elon, and UNC. My favorite was UNC, Duke, and I did not like Elon all that much. I was originally considering somewhere warm, but now weather isn't a big preference of mine. Preferably Northeast, North Carolina, or California, however.
City campuses don't appeal to me, like I think NYU and BU lack the kind of strong campus atmosphere that I want. Columbia looks good, however.

Thanks for your help. Also, which of these would be matches, reaches, and safeties??

Uh, if we're gonna talk size, DePauw would be small. Only about 2300, whereas the other "medium" schools listed have 5k plus students.

DePauw has a very good liberal arts based comm./journalism major. There is no specific journalism major, but it can be a concentration within the major. Plus, in the liberal arts tradition, the school would like to see you explore other areas of the media besides JUST journalism, thus no journalism major.

I'll be attending DePauw in the fall, and I plan on majoring in comm. Also, I'm a Media Fellow, which seems to be right up your alley. Take a look at http://www.depauw.edu/honors/media/index.asp. Being a media fellow will really open up some oppurtunities for you in the journalism and media field (i.e. garunteed off-campus internship your Junior year). Plus, it more or less insures (unless you sit aorund and don't do anything) that you will be pretty well involved (I haven't even started at DPU yet, and I already have a radio show assigned!) at the PCCM (Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media), which houses our radio station, WGRE (#6 college radio station in the country, according to Princeton Review), TV station (D3TV), newspaper, yearbook, etc. etc.

So, yup, I guess you can tell I like my school a lot. Take a look.
