My son was admitted to UC Berkeley molecular biology program . We live in Florida and he was admitted to UF as well.
My main question is that is it worth to go to UCB and pay the out of state tuition compared to UF.
if you would compare UCB to a private school which one is comparable or at the same level
It’s after May 1st, how can you not have committed? Wad Berkeley off the waitlist?
In terms of SAT and ACT scores of students UCB is like Boston College or University of Rochester, which for most students are far cheaper than UCB as an out of state student. I wouldn’t subsidize the education of California residents when you have UF there.
UF is a wonderful school I wouldn’t pay for OOS when you have such a good in state option.
well UF is considered a party school and ranked as #6 in partying schools.it doesnot have the same reputation as UCB also UCB is ranked #1 in Molecular biology tie with Harvard. not sure if this is true for undegraduate
I thought the reputation of UCB is much better that Boston college… I thought it is ranked as Wash U or Emory
UCB OOS Tuition and fees=$38,140
UF in-state Tuition and fees=$6,300
and the UC’s plan on increasing OOS tuition rates over the next few years. Considering UF is also pretty strong in Biology and research, it’s kinda hard to justify the price difference for an undergraduate degree. You’ll find plenty of UF grads in master’s/PHd programs at UCB, MIT, etc.
UF is a party school? Sure, it’s a lot of fun, and is ranked fairly high when it comes to quality of life issues. Most Gators love their time in Gainesville, it’s the classic college town. With close to a 1,000 clubs, it’s easy to find your “tribe”.
However, some may prefer a more urban campus (like Boston). It’s really up to your personal preference. What you can afford and where you want to live for 4 years. Any of these schools will get you where you want to go in life.
