I am an international student(INDIAN) with a sat score of 2090 and a gpa of 4.I have voluntarily worked with a ngo for 6 months and was in the top 5% of the class.I also played football, cricket and basket ball for my school teams.......Now do you guys can suggest me any colleges or scholarships.....

What do you plan to study?

How does that 2090 break down? Will you be retaking? A 4.0 should be able to do better if your school was reasonably rigorous.

Did you take the subject matter tests? How did you do on those?

What can your parents afford to pay?

took sat again in jun.Hoping for a increase in maths score
i am planning to study computer engineering or computer and information security.
I haven’t taken any suject test…and i told u i am from india…our coursework is one of the most rigorous in the whole of world…WE have phy ,maths and chemistry books having pages about 1.4k,1.2k and 2k…Other than my subjects were environmental science, computer and english…my corsework was very difficult…

I’ve lived and worked in India, so I’m pretty familiar with the school system and its relative strengths and weaknesses.

A low writing score might not be held against you if you are a STEM (science, tech, engineering, math) student from India. As is, it’s good that you retook the test because your scores are low for someone from a rigorous school, if you need a lot of financial aid. And for many schools here, you will need subject matter tests - definitely the more advanced math one if you are interested in engineering - and up to two more for some schools.

And you haven’t answered the question about what your family can afford. The fact that you are from India doesn’t mean anything. There are wealthy families there for whom financial aid isn’t an issue, and families who need just a little help, which greatly increases the likelihood of their kid being accepted. If you are depending entirely on financial aid, the list of schools you might apply to is significantly different.

ya i ll be needing about 50% scholarship…i am a science with maths students…and is a writing score of 740 considered low???and is a sat score of 2090 considered low?

No a writing score of 740 isn’t considered low. It’s extremely good. The point is that the others scores are low compared to the scores of other applicants from India who are hoping to receive a lot of financial aid and/or scholarships. Keep in mind that India and China are the two countries that send the most international undergrads to the US so you have a lot of competition.

One way to tell if you are competitive as an international is to look at the Common Data Set for each school (you can google it) for the most recent year available. Go to section C, where the scores are. As an international, looking for a significant scholarship, you want your scores to be in the top 25% of the admitted class, if possible.

You don’t have to meet or exceed these scores in all three areas of the SAT: But there will be plenty of applicants from India who have, especially the math score - and you are a STEM so they expect it to be high. The next question then is how close are you and what else do you have to offer compared to others from India who have applied and need as much aid as you do.

One piece of good news is that most schools will ‘superscore’ which means that if you take the SAT multiple times, they will take your top score from each section to create your final score. So that 740 is ‘finished’, even if you do worse the next time around in that section.

At this point, your best bet would be to spend time in the international forum on CC - there is one specific to students from India. Check out their scores and where the got in. And get those subject matter tests done as well.

If you need scholarship money, you might look at the University of Texas at Arlington. Apparently, they have been giving out scholarships to international students much more so than other Texas state schools.

so m’s mom what do u think will be a score that will make me eligible for scholarship. And thanks for ur replies…Ur answers really are helpful…And one more thing does knowing french, spanish and hacking counts in ur profile?

Oh thank you…will surely do so…but is u of texas good…sorry if i am asking a foolish question but i dont have much idea about us colleges…

The scores you need to be eligible for scholarships and financial aid will depend on the school. As a general rule of thumb, you would have to be in the top 25% of the admitted class academically (test scores, grades, class rank) OR an underrepresented minority - for that particular school. As an Indian, you are an URM only in the mid-west and possibly in some areas of the south - and generally in small college towns rather than urban areas.

And when you say “50%” scholarship, what does that mean in terms of dollars? Most schools cost between $25,000 (some state Universities) to $55,000 p.a. At one of the top schools, you probably need an SAT in excess of 2250 plus some impressive SAT II scores in Math and at least one other subject.

When you ask if ‘knowing french, spanish and hacking’ counts, I’m not sure what you mean. Lots of people are multi-lingual. (In our area, 40% of the local high school speaks English, an Asian language and Spanish or French.) It counts in so far as most schools require you to have several years of a foreign language and if your multi-lingualism is the result of an interesting personal history, then yes that helps differentiate you. Being a hacker helps to demonstrate an interest in computers and computer security, which is your field, but I’d be careful about admitting to wrong-doing without a statement about explaining how you use your powers only to further truth and justice and never do anything illegal.

As for specific school suggestions, I’d suggest you check the forum for Internationals (India).
