Help with counselors purposefully cancelling classes despite student interest.

I want to make this as brief as possible for you guys.

I am going to be enterring my Senior year next week. I chose this particular school because of the high level classes offered, one of which was IB Math HL. However, throughout last year the AP Calc teacher was constantly promoting AP Stats as a better course for engineering, science, pre-med, etc majors (which it isn’t). Additionally he also said that the IB MAth HL class was by invitation only which it definetly is not. The counselors failed to correct these errors and continued to advertise easier classes as better. As a result many students were turned off from registering because they didn’t know they could or were convinced that AP Stats was a better course for their future major. This led to many seniors going from AP Calc and IB Math SL to AP Stats instead of moving up in their difficulty.

Now the class does not have enough students to be held and as a result I am left without a math class to take at my school as a Senior. Many students did not register because they thought that they would be invited or had to be invited by the teacher.

Do you guys have any advice about any possible laws or education codes in CA that they may have violated by misleading students? Any general advice?

I greatly appreciate any help. Thank you very much ahead of time.

I would just take AP Stats. It’s better than nothing! Also, I heard that it actually is useful for many majors.

None were violated. I am close to 100% confident that somewhere in the course handbook there is a sentence stating that the school reserves the right to cancel offerings for whatever reason.

Take AP Stats.

The main issue with taking AP Stats is that I already have. I have no math available for Senior year as of now.

Well then don’t take math! Sounds like a pretty great senior year to me! Especially since you exhausted all of your options. That’s one less class to contribute to your senioritis!

If you don’t want to not take a math class, check out online options or see if you can do an independent study. Typically, you would have to register for college classes earlier than this, but you might want to poke around a bit to see if there is a way to get into a class at your local CC.

That’s a key point you should not have left out of the original post; then, as mentioned above, look for online or community college options or just don’t take a math class. When it comes time to apply to colleges, make sure that your GC notes that you had exhausted your school’s curriculum; colleges will not fault you for things outside of your control.

I agree, make sure you GC states you exhausted your math curriculum and if you want to, take a CC math class. My only warning with that is most CC math classes (Depending on type of math, like intermediate algebra, for example) is for people who did not do well the first time and want to improve so be wary of the class you take.

And on a side note… AP Stats is good to take, but I would not say it is more practical for an engineering major… I know one and he is taking multiple calculus classes in one year…
