Help with course selection

What classes have you taken that you really liked at Princeton?

Also, are freshmen allowed to choose when they want to take the writing seminar? (fall or spring) Is it an actual class where students receive grades?

How does course selection work? Do I have to take a 200 level course before I can take a 300 level course? It would make sense for languages but how about history courses?

You are assigned a semester to take writing seminar. It counts just like any other class, and the grading is not easy. While course numbers are a rough indication of the relative difficulty of two courses in the same department, this is not a hard and fast rule. As long as you fulfill the proper prerequisites for a course, you can take it. Even if you don't fulfill the prereqs, you can still take the course as long as you have the instructor's approval, which is fairly easy to obtain. I did this for economics. In the history department, course number don't mean a whole lot. Many of my friends are taking 300 and 400 level history courses without having completed any prior coursework in the department. Princeton allows its students to stretch themselves; it does not hold them back with bureaucratic regulations.

I'm planning on doing a certificate in European politics and society and the announcement says that you need to attend a thesis colloquium in senior year. Does this count as a class? Are colloquia necessary for anyone doing junior independent work/writing the senior thesis and do they count as classes or as something separate?

Also, how feasible is it to do two certificates in addition to your major?

Finally (I'm almost done, I swear!), when are you notified about what semester your writing seminar will be in?
