Ok…here’s our dilema. S has sent in his SIR to Cal Poly for BRAE major (bioresouce/ag eng). He actually wanted Mech E,but with gpa was not a strong candidate. The BRAE major would be the closest major to ME, sharing quite a few core/support classes. He could specialize in mechan. or electri. control (with up to 10units of upper div. electives). There seems to be alot of things one could do with that major, though S is more interested in robotics/aerospace kind of things.
The dilema is…if he wants to change into ME later, I heard it’s almost imposible from outside of the engineering department. Or should he just seriously consider going to another school if he wants ME that badly? BTW S also accepted to UCR, CP Pomona for ME, UCSC for EE.
We are scheduled to visit Cal poly this week and most likely get a better feel for the major once we talk to some of the BRAE profs. I think he wants to go to Cal poly just because it’s the best ranked school he got accepted to.

It’s not IMPOSSIBLE, but it is difficult to switch into the engineering department. According to the tour guide that I talked to lol. However, when you visit definately talk about double majors and if hes able to do that.

I was also iffy about the school because I’m not sure I want to stick with the major I got in with (Business Admin) but I visited the school, and it definately changed my mind, and I’m thinking about just double majoring.

Good luck

Just returned from visiting Cal Poly. S really enjoyed the vibe at poly. Spoke to the department head of BRAE and was satisfied with all the questions he/we had. Seem like the major incorp. lots of MEch eng and CE but with a bent toward using it for living systems, ie. food, water management/resource, biofuels, etc… S was happy to know half of the faculty are certified mechanical engineers. Plus it’s a small department (200 compared to over 1000 in ME). Better for getting to know the profs.

So to make a long story short, S seems happy in his major and probably won’t need to switch majors.

Will be going back next week for open house to check out the housing. Didn’t have time for it this time.

i’m a brae major at cal poly, and it would be no big deal to switch from brae to me as long as he has good grades. though honestly, he probably won’t want to once he gets involved with the brae program
