Help with estimating my chances...

Hey everyone. I am going to be a senior this year in highschool. I want to go to an engineering school, and will be applying to the following:

--Cooper Union; Columbia Engineering; Carnegie-Melon; and MIT

I would like to know my chances of getting in to these schools with the following statistics:

92.5 GPA
1330 on SAT (700 M/ 630 V)
750 on Math I SAT II (Will be taking Physics SAT II this year)
28 on ACT (Taking it again)
5 on AP Calculus AB, 3 on AP Gov, and 3 on AP Euro (Will be taking Calculus BC and Chemstry this year)
92 Average on NY Regents (Including all math, bio, chemistry, physics, hebrew, and all social studies)

I am co-captain of Model UN/ Congess Team.
I am co-captain of Science Olympiad Team.
My High School has a dual curriculum, regular studies and Jewish/Hebrew studies.

I would greatly appreciate any help, advice, or answers that you can offer. Don't be afraid to chime in.

Cooper Union: Not sure? I’m not really familiar with this school, sorry.
Carnegie-Melon: 35-45% chance. Mid- to high-reach.
Columbia (Engineering) and MIT: Don’t even bother applying. Not to be rude, but in 2011, Columbia’s SEAS was the most selective school of engineering in the Ivy League. It was the second most selective research college nationally behind, guess who? Yep. MIT.

In my opinion, you’re aiming a bit too high. You’re academics are far from spectacular, and your EC’s (at least the one’s you’ve listed) are lackluster. Unless you have some insane hook, you’re application will probably be thrown out without even being read thoroughly. At least, at Columbia and MIT.

Did you make any contributions to those teams as co-captain, as in a service project? I heard that it’s great if you started a drive, collection, or program.

Ok cowboycliche. What can I do to make this better? Obviosuly besides increasing my ACT score/ GPA. Give me a specific example.

Well, since your going to be a senior this year, it’s hard to say. I’d say your best bet is trying to make an influence in the community, through fundraising or something along that sort of line. Also, dasdui makes a good point; if you have the ability to use your status as co-captain to put together something that would give back to the community, I’d do it.

But again, in my opinion, your stats are just too low for you to even be considered at MIT/Columbia. Scrap those, keep Carnegie-Melon as a reach, and look for some better-suited match and safety schools.

Good luck!
