Help with FAFSA situation

I’ve never applied for FAFSA before and need help. Because my parents make enough money, I was never able to apply for financial aid, but now that I’m 24 I can apply without their information. The only thing is, I’m paid under the table and haven’t filed taxes in a couple years now. My credit card bills show that I make way more than the minimum required to file taxes, although I do get a lot of my money from my parents (I currently live at home). They are paying for me to finish my undergraduate degree but I am responsible for grad school, which is going to be $22k/semester, so I need all the help I can get.

Will any of this have an effect on my FAFSA application or draw attention to myself for not filing for taxes?

I appreciate any advice or knowledge anyone has on this topic. Thanks!!

Yes. You should be following the law and filing taxes. You could very well be pulled for FAFSA verification, and a tax audit. Stop breaking the law.

Why do you think you should be entitled to receive federal financial aid when you don’t follow the federal tax laws?

Even if you are paid under the table, you are supposed to file taxes on your money earned…perhaps as a self employed person.

I think the only aid you can get if you already have a bachelor’s degree is loans.

But when you fill out the FAFSA, you need to be honest.

What are you going to do when you apply for a job after college? Tell them you worked under the table, say you never held a job before?

If your employer is not willing to make you a legal employee, I would look for another job.

FAFSA is an app for fed aid.

The only fed aid for grad school is loans.

You need to start filing taxes.

That said, when you file FAFSA, no one is going to be looking at your credit card bills. That is not part of the FA process.

If you don’t pay any taxes, why should you fee entitled to financial aid?

I agree!

Where do you think that the monies for federal aid comes from? The tax payers. While you may get a financial aid package, you will not receive any actual aid without documentation from the IRS. You gotta file your taxes

Or you would need to complete a non-filers statement. But in that you have to document why you did not need to file taxes. In your case you DID need to file taxes…you just didn’t.

The sad part about this is that if you earned below a certain amount, you actually MIGHT not have had any tax liability…well…except your share of the SS that your employer was not paying.

You need to correct your tax filing situation.

Also if you work under the table you won’t be covered by workman’s comp if you get hurt at work.
