According to my Financial Aid letter from NYU, I have to have the FAFSA filed by February 15, 2006. But according to my parents all the documents I need in order to file the FAFSA (income tax returns, etc.) won't be available until a later date (like April).

How am I supposed to file the FAFSA before then? I'd really like to hear from a parent who has already had to do this. Please help, this is really starting to frustrate me...

I know, my mother had the exact same problem too. If I remember correct, I think she said she used last years tax and income information, or she did an estimate on what they were going to be.

The only problem I have with filing tax return info for the previous year is that the year before my father was great financially, but over the past year he lost his job and has had to file for bankruptcy, but that isn't going to show up on the FAFSA since his tax returns won't be here until April.

Thanks everyone, I just don't want my financial aid to drop b/c of my dad's situation. I'll probably just use my parent's 2005 info, but I'm also going to call NYU and ask...

When you file your fafsa, you are supposed to use your 2005 tax returns. Since the 2006 tax season only started Jan 2, you cant really have much or a tax return.

We just estimated and it told us we could come back later to update it. Most likely my mother's taxes will be done by February 15th, so I'm not too worried.
