Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble with the Financial verification/certification form that international students have to fill up to show that they can attend school and get an I-20. Can anyone familiar with the process of filling up the form help me? Thanks! :)

I'm applying to a handful of schools and for some of them I know I will be unable to attend unless I get a scholarship. However, when I send in my application to see if I'm eligible for any scholarships, I also have to send in the financial verification form at the same time. (I think) But I won't be able to show that I can afford the school unless I know I got a scholarship so therein lies my problem. How do I go about filling up the financial verification form? I'm also afraid if I send in a form that shows I can't pay for school they won't consider my application and will just reject me automatically. D: Anyone can give me some advice on this?

Sorry if this is confusing, because I'm not quite sure how to explain the problem...? :(

Any help would be much appreciated! ^^

OP, I think if you need scholarship in order to attend schools, you should apply to need-blind schools. See [Top 6 Need-blind Colleges in US for International Students - Desperate Guide: Undergraduate College Financial Aid, Scholarship](http://www.desperateguide.com/us/top-6-need-blind-colleges-in-us-for-international-students)

4kids…almost ALL U.S. colleges are NEED BLIND for admissions. Need blind is an admissions term. It simply means that your financial need is NOT taken Into consideration when your application for admissions is considered. It has nothing to do with financial aid. But…MANY colleges are NOT need blind for admissions for international students.

And in addition, once accepted, and a decision to attend has been made…each college requires that verification that the student CAN pay his bills or the student can NOT get a visa to study here. This can include school financial aid.

The guarantee to meet need for all students is a different thing. This is for need based aid. the student needs to check each college website to see IF they award need based aid to international students. Some do, some do limited amounts, and others do not at all.

I believe there are only 6 schools that are BOTH need blind for admissions AND meet full need for international students.

The way it is done is that you have to fill out the I-20 form when it is time for you to go off to college and you know where you are going so that you can complete the form. You fill out your part of it which is what you and your family can cover with the proofs required and the college that accepted you fills out the rest. The college verifies that you are indeed a accepted student who has made the commitment to attend there, and it fills out any such info that they can provide, including the financial aid and/or merit package that they have offered you, and that you have accepted. The two have to dovetail to prove that you can afford to be in the US.

However, your finanical aid package from schools even the most generous will depend very much on the info you provide them. Some students find themselves in a quandrey because they fudge their need to up admissions chances at those schools not need blind in admissions and then find that they don’t get the aid they need to attend, and they have to verify that the funds are there up front to get that student visa.

The reason a lot of school are not need blind in admissions for international students is that they know that there is little chance a student can come if the school cannot meet the need, and the school does not want to waste an acceptance when it’s clear that the money is not going to be there. International students do not have the loan and job possibilities than US students may have.

Hi 4kidsdad, thumper1, cptofthehouse, thanks for all the replies! Really appreciate your help and efforts.

I think I probably should have mentioned that I am applying to schools that are both need-blind for international students. However, I want to see how much aid or scholarships I’m given before I decide (and know if I can) go to those schools. But before I’m given such information, I already have to send in a letter verifying I can pay full costs of the school, which I can’t until I see if I’m offered scholarships. So how do I go about filling up the form in that case? Or will the school help me settle it if they do decide to give me aid?

Sorry if I wasn’t clear enough earlier D:

‘I can pay full costs of the school’ is false? But you sent in the verification letter anyway?

Yes, I won’t be able to pay full costs of the school unless given aid or scholarships. But I have to send in the verification letter before that (I haven’t sent it yet). Which is a problem because I wouldn’t be able to show that I can afford the school. So I’m wondering how other international students (who couldn’t pay the full costs but were given aid/scholarships) went through the process of the financial verification? Sorry this is so confusing… :(

There is a whole section on this site for international students. You might want to post your question there.
