I'm currently a freshman at one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation. The problem is that I really want to transfer to this other college for the Spring 2008 semester. My dilemma is that I was already admitted to the college that I want to transfer just this past Spring, but I chose to come to the college that I am at now. Do I have any chance of being readmitted to the college that I want to transfer to? It is not quite as prestigious, but it is still a very strong liberal arts college and has more of the things that I am looking for in a college and for the experience. I feel like I made the wrong choice back in April and really want to know if I can have that opportunity back. The school that I want to transfer to DOES accept freshman mid-year transfer, granted that space allows. However, this past year was particularly competitive and I think that their freshman class might be full... I have already been in contact with the admissions office for this school, had my interview, reactivated my application, and am almost finished with my supplemental info. Do I stand any chance of being readmitted? I'm worried they might see my previosuly choosing another college over them as a strike against me. I know that it is not typical for freshman to transfer mid-year, but I am certain that this is the right choice for me. I don't know why I was so blind and stupid back in April! I was already admitted and could be there right now, that's what kills me! Do you think since I was already admitted, I have that working in my favor and that because of that fact the admissions committee will work to make it happen for me? I'm so confused and anxious! Any advice that anyone has would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Of course, you stand a chance. Definitely.

If their current class is full, that might mean the chance is limited for spring transfer. But do not despair.

My S transferred as a sophomore. He applied to two schools where he had been accepted as a freshman but didn't choose. One we really felt he'd "burned some bridges" at, because he almost went there - had a deposit there, etc. Lo and behold, he was accepted at both schools for transfer, even that one.

I think having been admitted previously will work in your favor, not be a strike against you. You have done all the right things by re-instating your app, contacting the admissions office.

Relax as much as you can. Try to enjoy the time you still have at your current school. Keep in contact with your preferred school about spring/fall transfer.

Good luck.

Andale, would you be willing to read my transfer essay? I feel awkward having people here at my current school proofread it for me... and you also seem to know what a good transfer essay should look like since you have helped in the process before!

I would be happy to. PM me the essay(s), along with the prompt(s), what school(s) it is for and your email address. Might be a day or two before I can look it over - if the deadline is looming, let me know.

My S is doing the exact thing you want to do. He knew 2 weeks into the semester that he had made a mistake. He immediately contacted the other school (which is actually a more selective school), reactivated his application, met with the transfer counselor, and all he had to provide was the final HS transcript and a personal statement. He had his acceptance within a week. I think it definitely helped that he had previously applied and been accepted. As for room in the class, just as I reminded my S, there are some people that are as anxious to get out of the other school as you are to get in!
